Page 1 of Have I bought into the wrong HD format?

Bought the Toshiba Ep30 HD DVD Player from Play - good price and with 7 free films not to be sniffed at.

I know that HD is a newish format but after going into town and checking out HMV & Zavvi (or whatever Virgin is now called) I did notice that the selection of HD DVD movies was half that of the Blue Ray movies. Not that I`ll buy movies from these - 99.9% of the time buy online.

So I take it that Blue Ray are winning the battle then? :/

yup. At the moment.

LIke all these things I have been looking at sales figures on the digital bits site. They seem to point to Blu Ray selling more. The PS3 is likey to be the nail in the coffin for HD DVD as it`s a very good quality low priced Blu Ray player.


I have chosen Blu Ray myself.

Every version of Close Encounters Of The third kind in Hi Def was too tempting to pass up.




The reason I don`t have a Wii? It`s just a Gamecube which makes you tired quickly.

I don`t think you`ve bought into the wrong format at all. Even if Blu Ray is outselling HD DVD, HD DVD is selling very well all things considered. I think they`ll both continue to coexist for a good while, and with HD DVD players becoming more and more affordable (over BD) I think the figures will continue to rise.

And to be honest, if you`re questioning whether you`ve bought the right/wrong format, then you probably shouldn`t be buying into either, because you`ll always take a risk as an early adopter of a new format. Should have just stuck to DVD!

It didn`t stop me sticking with Nintendo when all the High Street stores stopped selling GameCube games. And look at them now!

The High Street is very fickle and bases their stocks entirely on sales figures. "The PS3 is selling well, ergo we stock Blu-Ray movies".

QVC were selling a HD-DVD player for around £170 with 7 free movies yesterday. Reckon if that trend catches on, HD-DVD will soon catch up again!

Both formats great theres a place for both, though in my opinion as hd is the buzz word, its on everything, you wont find blu-ray ready/compat on your tvs etc. I think most people will be buying more hd dvd players, tescos have the ep30 on shelfs now. The qvc one mentioned is bascially has all the toshiba hardware under the bonnet and under a different brand name.

Trouble with this war is that most people seem to forget the intended use of both formats - watching films. Think of the films you like to watch and then choose the format that offers more of them (if you can`t afford both). Don`t listen to all of the stupid insults thrown around by both camps.

tbh, even though they look tempted, I still get the feeling, that both of those formats won`t be worth getting thanks to downloading.

The general feeling from none gadget geeks I`ve spoken too is if I can already see and hear the film, why do I care if HD and Blu Ray is a little bit sharper and a little bit clearer.

Piracy is on a huge increase, and DVDs are getting stupidly cheap, so what`s the point on spending on average £23 on a blu ray or HD on a new title, when you can either get 5 for a tenner for pirates (or free if you have the know how), or on average between £5 to £15 for a dvd?

Its true. My gramophone and betamax are still going strong, while all you suckers have spent hundreds on `dvds` and `cds`. You can pick up videos for 20p from oxfam. You would be a f***ing moron to spend any more. Whos laughing now, eh?


And, less sarcastically, HD and Blu-Rays are available from most video rental places. Ive just swapped my DVD queue for Blu-Ray at no extra cost .
