HD DVD

The Jackal (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 25th October 2007, 09:01

I have "borrowed" a mates HD DVD player (for the 360) in the hope that the wife will get me one for Christmas. My question is what films should I sit and watch with her that will really show off how good HD is?

Off the top of my head:

Planet Earth
Batman Begins
Matrix Trilogy

Depends on what kind of movies she likes though I reckon the Planet Earth box-set will win her over :)

I buy all mine from Amazon.com, although I have been known to purchase them from sendit.com in the UK, and currently have Pan`s Labyrinth on pre-order at Play.com.

King Kong looks amazing, and that was one of the first discs out. Transformers should also look incredible; same goes for 300.

It might be worth you setting up a Lovefilm account and renting out some HD DVDs from there?

I should be getting 300 with my HD DVD player (there`s no hyphen in it), and I`m wondering whether some of the issues with the SD transfer will be ironed out. There was minimal edge enhancement and some strange digital noise in certain scenes. It was worse on the R1 than the R2. Still bloody good though.

I`m not looking to `double dip` on many releases, but I think I`ll definitely invest in the Matrix trilogy when I get the player. No point going for the Ultimate set as none of the extras are in HD and I already have the SD set. Might wait until the US price drops to £18 first though ;)

The best places to buy are the usual: Play, Amazon and Movietyme are all pretty good
To be honest HD discs are way overpriced right now (44 euro for Smokin` Aces at Play?) - hopefully prices will start to drop in the New Year

I currently have four BD titles: the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Black Book and Oldboy, but can`t watch any of them yet. I think the HD DVD player I want has Bourne Supremacy and 300 free with it, plus you can mail off for a further five titles from a pretty decent selection. From memory you can get stuff like Serenity, Hulk, Children of Men, Full Metal Jacket, Dreamgirls, World Trade Center, The Prestige and more. They limit how many new releases you can have, but it`s still a great deal. If I had to chose a format it would definitely be HD DVD based on the cheaper hardware and this offer... You get jack with BD in the UK (except players with built-in (obsolescence).

Pretty much what he said!

You choose your five from three groups (2 @ £15 + 2 @ £18 + 1@ £24), from the voucher, being the skinflint I am I looked up the prices for each, Children of Men & Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift in the £15 selection group are actually £18.

Updated maths means the deal is worth £90 - £96 (+ £30 from the two in the box) for the five.

300 - looks mighty fine. But the HD Combo version from Play (international site) so if you don`t get a HD player you can play the other side in a standard DVD player
