DEATHPROOF - QT IS BACK!!! Definately his 6th

bigsister (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 2nd September 2007, 19:30

Just seen this flick on Unrated DVD and can confirm that this is well and truly.......FANTASTIC!!! Lots of dialogue, but its music to any QT`s fans ears, he has a nack with words, its almost action, but in a written form. But when the conventional action kicks in, mostly towards the end after we get rid of the grainy dirty cinema film reel effect, Oh Wow, Stuntman Mike didn`t see that coming...watch it and love it, i did. :x

to me it really was a `film of two halves`.

iSPOILER:
loved the first half, where we meet all the characters in the bar. i think tarantino did a great job of recreating the atmosphere of a good night out and introducing us to all these weird and wonderful characters. i also loved Kurt Russells Stuntman Mike and the way that, even though he is the baddy of the piece, he is a complete loser and quite awkward around people (like the scene where he is explaining what he has been in, yet no one has heard of any of the shows)

however, the second half annoyed me more than anything else. Although Tarantino has never really done moral characters i just couldnt take to these girls as they happily left their friend with a someone who is quite obviously going to rape her just in order to test drive a car and the whole thing with them chasing stuntman mike seemed a little harsh....i mean they could have just let the police handle him rather than beating him to death. I also felt the whole second half was a more of a showcase for Zoe Bell and found her `playing myself but not really` acting style a little grating
.

all in all, i would say Death Proof is clearly Tarantinos weakest film and it is very different to what i was expecting, in that it is barely a horror film and more of a cult 70`s road movie (think Vanishing Point). however, viewed as it was intended to be (as part of the grindhouse package) it does a great job of recreating that 70`s b-movie style].

I take it you are disregarding Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 as two films then. Personally I think I will once they finally make the "whole bloody affair" version available on dvd.

The main reason is it gets rid of the stupid ending in part one, that takes away from the ending of two, which was only done so they had something to get people back for the second.

Firstly, this is only his fifth film if you don`t include `My Best Friend`s Birthday`, `Four Rooms` and count `Kill Bill Vol. 1` and `Kill Bill Vol. 2` as one film. Secondly, QT is only back as a reference-obsessed geek, not as the mature filmmaker responsible for `Jackie Brown`. I didn`t mind the film references in the `Kill Bill` films, as they were designed as homages, but to reference your own films seems self-indulgent - there are references to `Reservoir Dogs`, `Pulp Fiction` and both volumes of `Kill Bill`.

For a man who has such a flair for great screenplays, the dialogue in `Death Proof` sounded completely out of place and it was almost like a group of female Quentin Tarantinos talking to one another. By now he should realise he can`t act, so his cameo was excruciatingly bad and ill-advised. Also, at 114 minutes, `Death Proof` felt long and probably should have been left at the 90 minutes it was in `Grindhouse`.

As someone who likes exploitation movies, I quite liked the grainy and damaged look to the film, but was surprised that that it was forgotten about during the second half after the sequence in monochrome and the end of the film was pristine. I was under the impression that `Grindhouse`, of which this is half, was an homage to and celebration of exploitation films, so why `Vanishing Point` was so heavily referenced is a mystery, as it`s not an exploitation nor a grindhouse film.

I wanted to like this film, despite being thoroughly sick of the hype surrounding `Grindhouse`, but now see why it flopped and if `Planet Terror` is anything like this, why people didn`t hang around for `Death Proof`. Every Tarantino film up `til now made me want to see it again, with the exception of `Kill Bill Vol. 2`, which made me want to watch both volumes together, but `Death Proof` was so disappointing I hope it bombs and Tarantino returns to `Jackie Brown` form.

Sums it up for me exactly.

Plus Grindhouse was the 2nd part of the double bill when they were shown as one.

It`s definitely a Marmite movie - but I thought it was great fun. Zoe Bell at the end is mind-blowing; terrific stuntwork.

And 1Mills meant that `Death Proof` was the second film in Grindhouse, which kind of invalidates your point David. ;)

That`s it: stuntwork - she`s a stuntman and can`t act, which was another gripe of mine. Quote:

Not really, if you re-read the now edited post! :p
