Page 1 of Oh My God MY Eye`s. Withnail and I region 2, Anyone else with problems.

Just got the UK version of Withnail and I and its giving me serious eye grief. Its a bit soft focus but more than that after it opens out after initial dark scenes it all peculiar and seems to be sort of twisting your vision around.
We both had headaches and pain in our eyes after a few minutes.

Anyone else come accross this, everything else we have is still bang on.

Had to give up couldn`t watch it. Anybody got any idea`s .

Probably down to it being a non DEFT conversion from NTSC to PAL.

I`ve bought the Criterion disc for watching, and the R2 for the commentary.

Dunc my boy. Can you explain yourself...So there was already a release before this November`s R2? Also what is DEFT?

DEFT is Digital Electronic Film Transfer and is a cleaner way of converting from NTSC to PAL. I`m no expert but I believe it eliminates the 3:2 pull down thus reducing motion judder.

Criterion released Withnail in August this year - non anamorphic, but IIRC not in 5.1 and not with a commentary.

The R2 master was prepared from the same transfer as the R1 but standards converted rather than a straight to PAL or PAL downconversion from Hidef.

Essentially in picture terms, the R2 loses twice - first by not having a direct to PAL telecine and secondly by the standards conversion being non DEFT.

Thanks Duncan its clearer in the now I know sense but not on the disc so its going back, I just can`t bear it, my VHS copy off C.4 is easier and better to watch, but what a film.

PS also got Planet of the Apes origional at the same time for £12 from play and that is absolutely stunning especially for its age.
