But does anyone really care about either of them enough to continue the format going? Whoever wins it`ll end up like laserdisc as average joe isn`t arsed unless he`s already got the technology in his ps3

According to Bill Hunt at the Digital`s Bits, Universal Pictures is taking substantial bungs from Toshiba and the HD-DVD forum to release exclusively in that format. Most of the rest of Hollywood is either backing Blu-Ray or is format neutral, with only Universal backing HD-DVD - and now we know why.

Although any betting man would put his wager on Bluray at the moment I still cant see it replacing dvd unless HDDVD formally gives up.

DVD as it stands still offers superior quality to what most people seeon their digital tv systems so I cant see Joe Public rushing out to buy into HD movies unless the amount of normal tv in HD increases massively.

We all know about the rubbish quality that SD gives on an LCD or plasma so unless we can spend money on a new tv AND get better quality most of the time I can see BR limping on and existing alongside DVD just as VHS did with Laserdisc

If you`ll pardon the phrase - bollocks! I have a number of SD sources feeding into my LCD tv and the quality is excellent (unless the source material is particularly bad and blocky). The quality of my upscaled sources is top rate. So far I only have BBCHD to offer a genuine HD source for comparison, and as far as I`m concerned the SD material I watch looks as good as I would hope it might.

I wonder if the people who bitch about SD looking so bad have their displays calibrated correctly.

As for the format war, my money`s on Blu-Ray. Whichever system wins will have to co-exist with standard def DVD for at least another five years, but I don`t think it will be a question of "limping". The industry is intent on the introduction of high definition services, and it`s just a matter of time before Joe Public gets the message and starts buying the tech in earnest. HD-Ready sets are already flying out of the shops in anticipation of the sporting events that Sky and the Beeb will be ramming down our throats in high-definition. Once the players get below £250, there`ll be no stopping takeup of the technology.
