Should I get HD-Dvd add on for Xbox 360?
Just had a loan from bank because I`ve got to buy a car now I will be travelling to work and will probably have some "spare" money that I will probably slam into ISA but just wondering, should I grab a HD-Drive (as they still aren`t region locked yet?)
The thing is I`m a bit of gypo when it comes to dvd`s and I very rarely buy a dvd as soon as it comes out (I currently really want The Prestige and Little Miss Sunshine) but know that they will be on 3 for £15 within a couple of months so can`t be arsed paying £13 now.
The reason I`m throwing this into the mix is I`m uncertain whether I will pay full price for HD-dvds knowing the tightarse I am. Although the flip side is I can see myself not buying normal versions of action films such as MI3 and things like that because I know it will look better on HD.
Also quick question I remember finding out a while back that the 360 won`t upscale through component, only VGA when I was trying to compare against my upscaling dvd player, so just want to confirm HD-dvd will be able to output through component?
Plus another important fact is the one mentioned above, I have an upscaling dvd player at the moment and only have a 32inch LCD. I`ve never seen a HD-dvd in action, supposedly most people in Llandudno are getting something called Betamax next year.

My brother bought one of these players from New York at xmas time, and he said that it`s
a great bit of kit, and saved a stack of cash buying it there as well !
As for the films, why pay top $$$ here in rip off Britain when you can get the HD films at a tenner less from the US suppliers? (Movietyme, PlayUSA to name but 2)

Oaklands Right.
I paid £108 incl Taxes from FAO in NY. Films are cheap as well. You pay more for HD DVD combo discs but not that much. M:I 3 is awesome in HD and you can see a big difference in quality over standard DVD. Argos are currently selling the player for £119.99.
There is no longer a free movie with it but it cheaper than GAME who have put the price up to £135. Robbing Bastards!!

I have 2 of these, ones connected to my Xbox in the living room and one in my attic hooked up to my pc. I`ve only bought films i really wanted and i got them online, local shops are a rip off! Great piece of kit, HD is great.
Cheers

How did you hook the HD drive up to your PC? I`ve got a brand new spare drive, that I want to get rid of, but if I can find better use for it I might keep it.

You just plug it into a usb port. If you are on XP you have to get drivers, but its fairly straightforward.
1mills, I wouldnt bother with the HD drive. By the sounds of it, for the amount of times you will use it, it wouldnt be worth it.
I would wait until the price of discs comes down and /or they make a dual format drive.

For the amount of times you might use it, it might not be a worthwhile purchase. Yes it`ll impress your friends, yes you will get some joy out of it, but possibly not enough to warrant the purchase of a £130 add-on.
I have to say, I don`t use mine that much because good HD releases are a little bit thin on the ground at the minute. I`ve got 2 films (Superman Returns & King Kong) and both look great. I`ve got Smokin Aces, Departed and Children of Men on order from Amazon.com, and I`m trying to buy combo discs where possible so I can play them on my normal DVD players.
I`m also holding out for the release of Pan`s Labyrinth and The Prestige on HD DVD, rather than buy them on DVD. It`s frustrating, but it`ll be worth it when I watch them back on my big TV. :D
But I have to say, I`m not that buying that many DVDs in general at the minute. Might order some from the Play.com sale but all the good (new) films end up getting cut in price so quickly that I resent buying them at their release prices.
I actually think that out of both formats Blu Ray will win, so it almost makes me want to buy HD DVDs. But then dual format players will undoubtedly be the norm in about 2/3 years (and available from your local Asda for £20).
If you`re not a gadget whore (which I am), then I probably wouldn`t bother with it. But if you do decide to, maybe I`ll sell you my spare drive (brand new, boxed, sealed) at a knock down price? ;)

I agree with not buying them on the first day of release, I usually wait till HMV or Virgin do their 3 for £20 deals, you can always guarantee that by the summer the new releases now will end up part of the HMV or Virgin deal.

Cheers for the info, I will probably not bother getting one then as I will end up with about 4HD-dvds I never watch.
BTW if you haven`t seem Smoking Aces yet you may want to consider cancelling your order, it`s already won most disappointing film of the year 2007 in the Mills household.
