New Battlestar on Terrestrial tonight 22nd June! Kind of...
You five in the back there. The ones who haven`t got satellite or bought the DVDs.
Battlestar Galactica redux starts tonight on digital terrestrial TV
There is a double bill at 9pm on Sky Three, if you can tear yourself away from Brazil v Japan.
Finally, a chance to see what all the fuss is about. :)

Since when has Sky 3 been a terrestrial TV channel?????? Well I don`t know when it started, but it definitely is a free/terrestrial channel (it`s on channel 11 on my TV, btw) :) .

So what`s all the fuss about? :/
It`s fast, slick, fairly well acted but...
It`s another one of those war on terror salves that US TV audiences crave,
It`s got the nauseating camera moves that accompany every drama since 24
They`re wearing suits and ties for heaven`s sake.
It`s supposed to be a sci-fi show, where`s the sci-bloody-fi?
But that`s on the back of two episodes.

Exactly. Wait until you get to `33` then it really gets going. As for the rest of your complaints, well, its a double edged sword. Budget didnt allow for too many pitched space battles, so theres not a great deal of shaky camera work through the series, but conversely, for similar reasons, there isnt much `Hard` Sci-fi. There arent many Robot Cylons, no realigning the warp phase discombobulator or any of that palava.
Its basically a deconstruction of the human condition, so it concentrates on the interplay and machinations of the crew primarily and I think, on that level, its very well done. People turning against each other, the conflict between the military and the civilians and ethics are all big parts of the story. There isnt much instant gratification to be had, but if you stick with it, it will reward you.
But, no, there arent many big sci-fi elements to it. There are no aliens or wormholes, so in that respect, yeah, i could see how `Hard` Sci-Fi fans would be dissapointed.

Actually, they skipped the miniseries and began with 33 and Water.
I don`t mind the whole exploring the human condition, but there usually is an element of allegory in sci-fi. That was absent here. You could basically tell this story on Earth, without the cylons and space battles (not a prerequisite for me in sci-fi). It just wasn`t divorced enough from our situation. There was no sense of the exotic, (except for one mention of Frack, and the card game for cubits). Sci-fi usually makes you work a little to uncover the message. nBSG basically beat you over the head with it.
With 33 it was
SPOILER:
Big Liner, loaded with nukes, heading on a suicide course to the fleet
Don`t really need a GCSE to figure that one out.
It isn`t sci-fi, it`s drama in space. That`s a big difference.
I do like drama, so I`ll keep on watching but it`ll still have to be better than yesterday.

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...
And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

One of the most subtle aspects of the series (and also an ingenius budget saver) is the fact that thanks to the Cylon War, technology has regressed significantly. I mean, yeah, for the most part, BSG looks like it could be set on a submarine or something.
Apparently, there is going to be a spinoff series, Caprica, which deals with the run up to the war which will, essentially, deal with all the problems youve identified. Proper hi-Tech Sci-Fi, machines rising up against man, all that malarky.
