Want the best version of The Frighteners?

chewie (Elite) posted this on Friday, 23rd December 2005, 10:36

The German R2 is the best. Uncut, both versions of the film (both anamorphic, uncut and on seperate discs). Plus two discs dedicated to the 4.5 hour doc.

I have heard nothing but complaints about the R1 version, the worst being that many people experience about 3 minutes of an unwatchable jerky mess at the layer change. It`s a DVD-18 so that`s probably where the problems stem from. The German version was cheaper than the UK version and includes that extra disc with the original cut on it in pristine condition (as opposed to the crappy original R2 release, cut and non-anamorphic). It`s a fantastic set and looks good on the shelf to boot 8)

I`ve been waiting a long time for this release, and I`m glad I waited for this instead of going for the R1.

Silly question, but is it in English?

Ignore that, Just got it up on the site and indeed it it.

Incidentally, if you want another 50p off ay cd-wow, just work for travis perkins and you get a special code to use. 13.49 - bargain!

Does look like a nice set, but I haven`t had any problems with the R1 and I already had the R1 theatrical cut so probably not worth it for me. Top film though.

Does it have a DTS soundtrack, because I didn`t see that on the page.

Nope. English and French 5.1 but oddly enough the Deutsch soundtrack is only 2.0

AFAIK, the only versions with DTS are the R4 and the Dutch R2.

Yes, it does have DTS (in English ;) ), on the Director`s Cut at least :) (haven`t checked the theatrical cut).

This is the first time I`ve seen the Director`s Cut and it does have some great additional footage. I think I prefer this version over the theatrical cut, but it`s nice having both. Now to make my way through the 4 1/2 hour doc and Jackson`s commentary (which was recorded before LOTR, so it`s just the Laser Disc commentary, still worth a listen :D ).
