The Night Watch/ Nochnoi Dozor

The Night Watch aka Nochnoi Dozor (Russian title)

A fantasy-thriller set in present-day Moscow where the respective forces that control daytime and nighttime do battle.

Has anyone seen this yet? Bloody good film in my opinion. I`d seen trailers for it and never realised it was a russian film which kind of through me of for no particular reason. Not like i had seen a russian flick before.

Very unique story that only starts to make sense toward the end unles you watch it a couple of times over. this to me feels they way Underworld probably should have, i know they are too completely different films but Underworld should have been as dark as this.

The film ends pretty suddenly leaving you feeling cheated in some way until you find out that it is a part of a 3 movie/book storyline but i just means ive got to wait until January for the second part.

Theres a trailer around somewhere for the 2nd part under the title Day Watch and the 3rd part named ironically enough Dusk Watch won`t get a lookin until 2007. I heard that while Night and Day are in russian Dusk will be filmed in English because the makers sold out to Fox, can anyone confirm that?.

Definatly a must see if your into Vampire, witchy, wizards and shapeshiftery type films.

It`s yet to hit cinemas this side of the pond but theres an R5 DVD release with English subs available here. Though i`d advise you stay clear fo the plot description if you wish to remain spoiler free, (idiots >:( ).

Watched it a couple of weeks ago. Think I must have had dodgy subtitles because I didn`t know what the hell was going on at any point durring the film.

Some great ideas in it though. Looking forward to the official UK version - apparently frp, an interview with the director the subtitles are really inventive.

Yeah my mate recons that if someone gets knocked over or owt like that the subtitles kind of splash as though being hit if you know what i mean. Sort of like the subtitles seem to be part of the background and are affected by various things. All sounds a bit distracting if you ask me.

Shall i assume that this feature isnt available on the R5 dvd?

Well I *think* it came out in the UK in September so I wouldn`t be suprised to see either a quick turnaround for Xmas or it being available just after.

i saw Nightwatch a couple of weeks ago...it is quite enjoyable if a little confusing at times. Do not go in expecting the `russian Matrix/Lord of the Rings/Star Wars` though...i would say the nearest comparison is the Blade movies with a few Star Wars pretensions (e.g. light versus dark). I really liked the look of the film, it is very stylish and puts a lot of Matrix imitators to shame. i`ll definately check out the next 2 movies.

any news on the R1 or R2 dvd release?

Just came back from seeign it with gf. As robjphat says, I would agree withQuote:
enjoyable if a little confusing at times
and as someone at IMD says Quote:
No masterpiece, but quite entertaining and imaginative
is fair.

I thought it started brilliantly but went went slightly downhill as it went on/got more confused!

Thought it was better than Underworld.

Edit:
Forgot to say, we both thought the subtitles were great, not distracting at all! Sometimes they seemed well thought out, .e.g. some-one is talking at the right of the screen, so you put the subtitles on the left. so they`re more visible! The few times effects were done with them I thought it was pretty cool!

Night watch" is a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy film (in my view: "Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy" meets Matrix meets Blade). The movie been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvds of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until recent limited release, while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia on pal dvd (without subs only). Both installments beat American movies in Russia. And the studio is insisting on filming the 3rd part in English. Ain`t US movie studios wonderful. But they did do a good job on making subtitles not a nuisance, but an enhancement
