Just watched it on TV (shame). Still a classic after 45 years. From the opening titles by Saul Bass, the stunning original music score by Alex North (eat your heart out Hans Zimmer), intelligent acting and script by Dalton Trumbo to the heart breaking end ("My love, my life. Please die, please die") a true classic.
I wonder if any of this CGI films are going to stand up as well after 45 years.
Spartacus is one of my fave all time movies, but with the exception of a recording from ITV in Jan `82 I have never again considered watching a tv showing of the movie.
It must rate as the movie I have shelled out for more than anyother opver the years.
After the ITV screening I paid £50 for a VHS from HMV(before sell through video),followed by its retail debut as it was in stereo, then its retail debut in restored widescreen, then on Laserdisc, then on R1 non anamorphic dvd, then R2 anamorphic dvd, then the Criterion dvd, then I tried the recent UK 2 discer with most of the Criterion extras, but the picture was so grainy compared to the Criterion that the UK one went on ebay.
Brilliant movie and lets hope that British television is one day mature enough to show its complete widescreen image rather than the cropped 1.85:1 shown today and always by the BBC.
But it is better than the 4:3 monstrosity that was broadcast and released on tape for years

ITV are fricking terrible when it comes to movies , they are generally shown in pan and scan from old transfers , cut to shreds , many ad breaks and scenes cut for timeslot reasons.
But then if you want a good laugh , try and find thier version of the ultra violent `Robocop` which was shown cut at a evening slot a few years ago , its better than any comedy movie released recently. They also showed Beverly Hills Cop last night at 6.00pm , i missed it but bet it was a good laugh , if the dubbing in robocop was anything to go by.

Ordered the recent TV version and need to watch it - region 1 of course.
I finally got around to watching this on the weekend, having owned the 2-disc R2 edition for the best part of a year now. I thoroughly enjoyed it, from the very good script to the excellent score, to some great acting performances (perhaps Douglas` rock-jawed Spartacus could have been a little better, but I laughed out loud several times at Ustinov).
I also managed to get a listen at the audio commentary, which was superb. There was excellent information in there from Douglas, Ustinov, writer Fast, designer Bass, and especially from Robert Harris, who oversaw the film`s restoration.
I got my copy for a fiver from HMV a while back. If you haven`t seen this one, and enjoy your classics, treat yourself in the January sales!
