Cliffhanger (DVD)

cedge (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 22nd April 2001, 22:36

Hello

I bought this DVD last week and i am really dissapointed with it as it has been cut in several places throughout the film. Why do they do this on a 15 certificated film. The first version I saw of this on television a few years ago and it was not cut as much. Does this bother anyone else that films released on DVD specifically that are 15 certificates that get cut to pieces? Also there is some instances on the film that the editing cuts out part of some words. The editing from the violence shots aren`t that great either. I feel that i have been ripped of in buying this film that isn`t the full version!

Please post your replies

Regards

BBFC wouldn`t allow it to be uncut at 15

and

BBFC does not allow uncut 18 anymore if a cut 15 version exists.

This is the reason why GoldenEye SE and Tomorrow Never Dies SE dvds are still cut in the UK

The MPAA in the US tends to censor sex scenes.
In the US Eyes Wide Shut was full of digitally generated censors (ie. copy a character from one part of the scene and place it in front of the scene to be censored)
The UK release is uncut.

But the US can have Unrated versions of films released which are not classified by the MPAA.

Cliffhanger is available in the US uncut
it`s also available in some other R2 countries uncut and with all the R1 extras.

I watched (and taped) Cliffhanger on BBC1 last week and I believe it to be the full uncut version. All the bad language had been restored from previous airings and includes all the shots of the guy being impaled on the stalacite as well as what seems to be complete and uncut violence. Did anyone see it and know if it`s cut?

The R2 review copy that I got ages ago (see my review elsewhere on the site) is marked at 18tbc on the certificate and is uncut with the extended beating on top of the cliff. I thought this was odd at the time as the VHS version I`ve used to have was 15. I don`t know if they wanted an uncut 18 but were refused as a 15 was still around, or submitted it to be cut down to 15.

Strangely enough, my dad who watched the film with me thought that the scene ruined the film as up until then it had been a good action movie with spectacular scenery etc - but he though the "gratuitous" violence in that scene was not in keeping with the rest of the film.
