Box Sets: complete picture or complete rip off?

UNBREAKABLE (Competent) posted this on Monday, 9th April 2001, 22:54

l don`t know about anyone else but l think Box Sets are pretty crappy. At first look is seems like a good deal, you get all the films in a series in one set.

But l think its all a bit of a con.

Take ALIEN for example. Two execellent films, one average film, then one that sucked (Choose yourself what goes where!) all wrapped in a cardboard box. CARDBOARD?? cheap skates! This is not going to look neat after a period no matter how careful you try. You can never risk lending them to some friend who will let his three year old run jam over it (okay, maybe a little extreme, but you know where l`m heading right?)

But more importantly you get conned to fork out your hard earned for a film you thought was rubbish when you first saw it, but now buy it because its in a box set!

ls there any series of films which you were thought were as good as the originals? (Think SUPERMAN 4, Alien 3 or something) And you will only probably watch them once because they were worst than you remember, but end up paying cash for it anyway!

Finally theres ALWAYS the risk/hope? that ANOTHER sequal will come out spoiling your box set! Jurassic Park 3 anyone?

Superman 1 & 2 ONLY for me this summer!

I vote Alien and Aliens excellent, Resurrection average, 3 awful. It`s interesting that after the dreadful bish made of Alien 3, they turned to comedy with Resurrection. I think Alien 5 should be a musical.

(Assumes smug mode)...

Okay if you can get a Clint Eastwood 7-DVD boxset for £14 from Tesco`s (the `offer` lasted about 1 hour, and then reverted to correct price - £87 - I got in on it more by total luck than judgement, and one of the last few by all accounts).

It`s on it`s way too...

Generally, tho` I agree - when is a box set not a box set...as Unbreakable states quite correctly, when they release another additional film in the set !!!

Aside from Alien Legacy (with it`s extra disc) there is very rarely an incentive to buy a box set - you`re usually better off buying them all singly : it`s cheaper, and you can get your kids to work with an old Cornflakes box, some magazines to cut up and some Pritt sticks - they`d do a better job, I reckon.....

Usually yes. But in the case of the forthcoming South Park season 4 box set no. You can buy the box set of 4 discs online for £39.99, but you`re unlikely to find each indiviudal disc at £10 or less until some mad lunatic half price sale turns up. The cheapest you`ll find individual discs is probably £14.99 at Play247 - so the box set would save you 20 quid there!

The World at War Box set is of supremely high quality. The disc boxes and set box are much better than those available individually. Since it was made over 30 years ago there`s no danger of any more episodes coming out. I paid £80 for it - that`s £2 cheaper per disc when on sale (£17.99 each) and you could only get 3 of the 5 for that price when not on sale (about £25 each).

Definitely worth it in this case. But the fact that it is an old TV series means it circumvents most of the problems mentioned already.
