Army of Darkness R3

Dickieboy (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 27th May 2004, 13:03

OK I`ve finally got round to ordering this, and yes we all know about the better picture and sound quality, but this is supposed to be the longest cut of this film, so what`s extra?
I know about the 2 second dress ripping scene, but this version seems to be around 3 minutes longer so what else is here?
Any help as always will be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, the dress ripping is the only extra bit in the R3 version. If you have the UK Anchor Bay release, PAL speedup may account for the reduced running time.

The picture and sound quality are also far better on the region3 version.

Here is the info from DVDCompare site :

OVERALL: R3
The R3 Hong Kong release has a vastly superior picture quality (it´s missing the "The Men Behind The Army" -featurette and "The creature concept art "). Color and shadow detail are far superior to the Anchor Bay versions. The MGM version also includes possibly the best 5.1 mix created for this film as well. R2 UK box set has the exclusive extra-material on the disc 4 thou.

GENERAL NOTES:
The AB version looks cropped on all four sides in some scenes and even zoomed in others.

All Anchor Bay´s prints are MISSING a short 2 second shot: After Sheila is first captured and presented to Evil Ash, he rips Sheila`s dress down to her waist. Explaining the next shot of looking her up and down. The following shot of the nude slave girls is also much clearer. The R3 HAS this shot (perviously shown only on the Japanese "Captain Supermarket" Laserdisc). The bodice ripping scene was actually an idea of a producer Dino DeLaurentis, and Raimi cut it from his "director approved" versions.

Anchor Bay`s releases consist of only 2 different discs released separately or as a combination. One is the Theatrical Cut, the other one the Director`s Cut. The differences between the releases are only covers and booklets.

Has it got some of the deleted scenes edited back into the film?
Maybe it has some footage from the theatrical version and the directors cut put into it...?

Even tho Army of Darkness is a good film, I still prefer the first and second Evil Dead.

There was a trend in the early 90s to make sequels P.C. or kiddie friendly. Now it`s gone full circle again, where we have a kiddie friendly John Woo film, and kiddie friendly Terminator 3.

When can we get back to full on action blood and gore, like Face/off and Die Hard. Only Tarantino seems to be keeping the tradition of good ol fashon shoot `em ups.
