I would Recommend anything with Chang Cheh (also know as sam seed) in it. He always plays a drunken old man, who just happens to be a bad ass.

I would also recommend the following

Invincible Shaolin
36 chambers of shaolin
5 deadly Venoms (probably my fave of the lot)
Brave Archer
Dirty Ho (seriously)
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
Flying Guillotine
Lengendary Weapons of China (often thought of as THE best KF film ever)
One Armed Swordsman

They are all good, some excellent. And i think they are probably the best examples.

I know you cant say a bad word against them in some circles, but the Shaw Brothers crew were so prolific, they produced a lot of s***e. So dont be surprised to find a few turds if you want to did through their back catalogue a bit more extensively.

Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent.
Forty percent of all people know that.

Make sure to watch the SB titles directed by Chang Cheh. He was the most recognised action performer/choreographer of the industry and a personal favourite of Quentin Tarantino. A good starting point would be THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (1967), which is a classic SB production and would serve as a handy introduction to the genre.

Other essential SB movies:

[*]Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Liu Chia-liang 1984)
[*]Death Duel (Chor Yuan 1977)
[*]Legendary Weapons of China (Liu Chia-liang 1982)

I hope that helps.

A big thanks to nickthegun and Chris on Fire for the recomendations. Was going to order One Armed Swordsman but the region 1 disc is dubbed, I can`t find any info on the audio of the UK release (anyone know?) and it dosen`t seem to be available on region 3. So instead I went for Eight Diagram Pole Fighter having read some good reviews of it and having it recomended by both nickthegun and Chris on Fire.

Thanks for the links to the reviews skirpydoink but I`d already found plenty on reviews. What I wanted was a personal recomendation to help make my mind up.

Thanks again. :)

I would also recommend chang cheh directed films, although they are not to everyones taste.

I was disappointed with 8 diagram pole fighter - I dont know why it was called this as he never makes an 8 diagram - its more like a letter S.

my personal favourites that i have seen are twelve gold medallions & trail of the broken blade ( if you like crouching tiger you must see this film it is so similarin many ways)

I assume you are buying the new celestial dvds - in which case a lot of the recommended films have not yet been released (ie legendary weapons), I would stick to those. There are many available from cd wow all for less than a tenner.

happy viewing
