Nope, Dicanio`s wrong.
The 2-disc theatrical cut will be released worldwide, i.e. R1 and R2, on 25 May 2004...extras look OK, slightly more than what was on the TC`s of FOTR and TTT. The picture will be anamorphic widescreen and the audio will be DD 5.1 EX (don`t quote me on EX).
The 4-disc extended edition will be released worldwide in either August or November, both months have been rumoured. As well as vastly increased extras, DTS-ES audio will be present and so will audio commentaries.

Has this been officially announced?
If so, great :D

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)
thanks for that ;)
It`s been announced in the sense that Alien Quadrilogy was announced way before Fox officially confirmed it. Specs and even artwork have been flying around the Net recently for the TC, so yeah, expect the King to return on 25-05-04. :-D

Any news of a trilogy set for the TCs?
Voles
According to an article over at DVD Answers, the Theatrical Cut will be out on DVD Summer 2004 (which suggests a later release date than the speculated May 2004, so could be August 2004) and the Extended Cut in Fall 2004 (which suggests November 2004). The Trilogy is set to be released next year, but what that will entail is currently speculation but more than likely will gather all three Extended Versions together in one box set.

Even MORE money making for New Line and Sir/lord/god Peter Jackson!
Imagine the outcry if that had been another "franchise" that did this, lets say, oh for arguments sake, Mr.Lucas and a few small sci-fi films he made some time ago. You would have some people wanting blood, screaming "rip-off" and "money grabber!"
One rule for one, one rule for another (or should that be one ring? ;) )

The difference being that Mr Lucas has re-released his trilogy many, many times and people are getting a bit sick and tired of him.
Of course, many fans have held off buying the individual LOTR releases, so not releasing the trilogy boxset would p*** them off somewhat.
Expect the worst and you won`t be disappointed
