Recommend some Region 2 films for great surround sound?

I. Merriman (Competent) posted this on Friday, 6th February 2004, 09:27

I was wondering what are some of the best Region 2 films you`ve seen, in terms of surround sound (rather than story quality) AND what was it that impressed you so much?

I`m talking about:
- rear channels in use most of the time
- lots of acoustic effects, creaking etc
- some sub-woofer workout etc
- doesn`t matter if it`s DD 5.1 or DTS, but must use all 6 speakers

Some titles that have particularly impressed me:

Donnie Darko - love the bits where the rabbit`s voice seems to be inside your head, also the ambient effects (bird song etc) and the "boing" noise, it makes when he tries to stab the rabbit in the eye.

Gladiator - the opening battle is full of awesome thuds and crashes, but there are good quieter moments too (wind rustling through fields etc) and then there`s the crowd scenes at the arena...

Galdiator - For the opening battle scene especially when the arrows are flying from one speaker to another.

True Lies - Too many action scenes to list. eg. Toliet scene, Harrier Jet, opening scene at the dance etc

Terminator 2 - The chase scene that proceeds Robert Patrick seeing John Connor in the shopping mall.

Jurassic Park - Scene 11 with the T-Rex ponding the two kids in the car then chasing Jeff Goldblum in the jeep (wish the T-Rex had caught him!).

Indiana Jones Trilogy - Too many to mention. THX sound say no more.

Lord of the Rings TFOTR - The orc battle scene

Matrix Reloaded - Chase scene half-way through.

Ice Age - When they all fall through down the casm(sp?)

Pearl Harbour - The attack on Pearl Harbour (lasts about 30mins), complete chick flick!

Terminator 3 - Too many to list. The bass is amazing from the rocket launcher is the graveyard.

Star Wars Episode I - Pod Race.

Star Wars Episode II - The explosion at the beginning.

The Fast and the Furious - S*** film, great workout for the sub and speakers though.

Hope this helps!

Pete

Hmmm, I`ve seen True Lies, but not on DVD, I`ll have to give it a try.

Agree entirely with LOTR, Matrix & Terminator etc.

Some more I forgot:

Resident Evil - rear channels seemed to be used in 99% of the film!
great clanging noises (in underground railway), roaring noises of the mutants, shattering glass, drpping water etc. Superb stuff!!

Blade 2 - good throughout, especially great opening scene, roaring motorbikes, trams etc. Then later on a nice eery scene (lots of creaking noises, dripping water etc) at the night club, just before the reapers attack.

Strange Days - lots of whoosing noises from one speaker to another during the opening chase, voices "inside the head" and crowd noise, plus the usual gun fire and explosions.

Anyone got any more?

X-Men 1 and 2. Both are astounding, and not just in the action scenes. Xavier`s voice comes out of every speaker at some point in the first film (well, not the sub ;) ). And the opening credits rock on both films, even though the scores are a mile apart (but equally good I think).

Hulk. Simply thundering soundtrack. Even Danny Elfman`s score on the opening credits gets your blood pumping.

Phone Booth. A really strong 5.1 soundtrack. Kiefer Sutherland`s voice is all around you. And the opening is great, plenty of bass 8)

The "old" classic disaster movie "Earthquake" is fun. It is presented in "Sensurround", as in the cinema. That means out of nowhere, as the earthquake strikes at certain times, the subwoofer kicks in quite dramatically. Rubbish movie, but fun.

Thanks Jim, that`s interesting, but that thread refers to the best single demo scene

What I`m interested in, is DVDs with good surround sound throughout the entire film

e.g. Saving Private Ryan has some great scenes for surround sound, but things get a bit quiet in the middle (so I wouldn`t count it).

Then not "Earthquake" (see mention above), as the effects only come with the eathquake itself.

I`ve watched a few films (but can`t remember the titles like the fool I am) where the Dobly Digital advert at the beginning is the best thing (sound wise) on the whole disc!

Darkness Falls is quite good for sound effects. I listened in Dolby EX and it is pretty freaky!
