I remember years ago `limited edition` meant get it on the day of release or via pre-order or you missed out. However now everything seems to be mass produced. Thinking of titles like -
The book of the dead - Evil Dead Battle Royale - Tin edition LOTR - boxset Dancer in the Dark - boxset to name just a few
Maybe I`m just confusing `limited edition` with Special Edition, in that case is anything ever Limited?

`Limited` means it`s produced in a fixed quantity - however, that quantity may be 100,000 copies! It`s just a marketing gimmick, at the end of the day.
Having said that, some `special` or `limited` editions do eventually get withdrawn and replaced by ordinary editions. See here for some comments about this.

These days it seems they throw words like `limited`, `special`, `collector`s` and bizarrely, `Widescreen` on the front of nearly every dvd released. It`s yet another cynical attempt by the marketers to get us to buy their product as soon as possible, as if the item is in short supply or summat...
