`Saw The Hulk at the weekend

Lee Thews (Competent) posted this on Monday, 7th July 2003, 17:46

Sorry folks, but I was really disappointed. This film is a f#cking mess! The script needed to be tightened up, it`s overly long and the characters are not really, in any shape of form, likeable. The Hulk himself rocks though. Sometimes he does look fake but for 94% of the movie you`ll not care `cause he can really kick arse!
The whole cartoon style of split screen is really intrusive. Everytime the picture zoomed in or out or in and out and in and over and in (I could go on) I just cringed.
Ang Lee seemed to want to have the style of Sam Raimi, but he fails miserably. It`s just too much. Like an A-level media student editing his first feature on an Avid system...every effect, every dissolve, every wipe...nothing is too much. How can you be expected to care about the characters in scenes when every five seconds the screen splits in two.
I really wanted to like this, BUT I didn`t. The first big disappointment of the new generation of Marvel fims.

Yeah, this was the Marvel film that I have been least anticipating.

Well, I`m intrigued by this film. I really want to see it. Ang Lee is a very interesting choice to direct it. I`m going to see it on Saturday morning, so not long to wait. I`ll also be getting Daredevil on DVD then as well (I hope) ;-)

Although Lee is, undisputedly, a great director, the whole feel of Hulk doesn`t seem right - just take a look at the CGI. Yes, it may not be a conventional comic book film, or mere popcorn fodder, but underneath its slightly differing surface it is nothing but a glossy action flick. If I see it and it does indeed change my mind, I will eat my proverbial hat.

I think you`ll eat your hat. The reason for the general public in America rejecting the film is because it is not an action film. And I think the CGI looks pretty f*cking good if you ask me, equal to if not better than Gollum in Two Towers, and this is by going on a few trailers that had unfinished Special Effects, so imagine how good it will look on the cinema screen. But it is not going to look realistic simply because no matter how good the CGI is, no one will accept a 15ft tall green monster to be real. But it will work when you watch the film, that I`m positive on.

Hulk has been getting very good reviews from film fans (ie. not critics or casual film-goers). Some have stated it is a masterpiece. Nobody ever said that about any other film such as this, which is why I`m intrigued. I just hope the flashy editing doesn`t ruin the film.

I am actually really looking forward to seeing this, hopefully at the weekend. But is there really split screen in it? I am not really a fan of split screen, you cant concentrate fully on 2 seperate pictures and it ruins the aesthetic feel of the film.

Yes it is split screen. very much like the tv series "24". i shall reserve judgement on the film until i have seen it. Too many times a film has had great trailers, decent "reviews" and has been a bit naff (Matrix Reloaded springs to mind). People i have spoken to have said they won`t be seeing the film because the Hulk looks like a cartoon and nothing like the tv show! i keep telling them the comic WAS before the tv series, and not the other way around, buth they won`t change their minds about seeing it.
Each to their own i suppose.

Even Empire gave it a **** review, they did comment on the OTT use of wipes, split-screens, zooms etc - that ain`t the crop of filmmaking to be honest.

Split screen! What a load of s***. I hate new films! Why is it neccesary to do all this flashy s***? The magic has gone out of film making. I`m gonna go kill myself now, f*** it.

I hope it ain`t gonna be like the Hollywood remake of Godzilla, It so looks like it, with the army tryin to chase him and that.

Does it have that sad piano music that was at the end of the original?
