Does Pulp Fiction ever use the rear channels?

Jim Morrison (Elite) posted this on Monday, 19th May 2003, 17:53

I have the R2 Pulp Fiction 2 Disc DD / DTS Special Edition DVD. I watched it all last night and cannot remember on one occasion the rear channels being used. I thought the audio on the whole was OK, on both DD and DTS but nothing special. Yet, Rik Booth would have us believe that:

"The surrounds are used well, whether it is during action scenes or during the various musical numbers, and the subwoofer is given a good workout."

Anyone else have this disc and what do you think?

Hmmm.... I can`t remember the audio being very active in the rear channels either. Actually, I was a bit disappointed in the sound on Pulp Fiction, but maybe that`s because when I first watched it, the film I took out the DVD player was Attack Of The Clones ;-)

Still, great film, and is there much need for the rear channels? (it doesn`t take THAT much away from the film, does it?)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Absolutely not, it was just having read the comments of one Rik Booth before watchign the DVD I expected the sound reproduction to be of the highest order. I was therefore disappointed to note that the rear channels and the sub are used sparingly, if at all.

It would be interesting to hear his defence.

I don`t really need to justify myself here, but what the hell:

When I watched it, I did notice that the soundstage was very ambient, making use of all the speakers at times. It may not be a boombastic track, but good nonetheless. And yes, on my Sony setup, the subwoofer was fairly active.

I personally think that if people take the time to read the reviews and have questions, that they should raise it. If they have questions of the reviewer then by all means ask and the reviewer *should* write a reply.

Perhaps if Jim Morrison asked me in a polite way then I would have most definitely answered without any qualms. But after the "Let`s hear his defence" comments and the original post, I didn`t feel I *had* to reply and and `defend` myself.

And Anil, stop always going on at me! You always have to jump in go against me in some way...yes, it is your opinion - fair enough, but recently you seem to relish a heated debate avec moi. :)

Oh, and techincally, "the reviewer *should* write a reply" doesn`t apply, I`m not part of Reviewer anymore.

Perhaps the "let`s hear his defence" was a bit OTT but what was wrong with the orginal post? Have you re-listened to the DVD and would you still go along with your original comments?

It was not my intention to kick anything off here, I was merely trying to establish whether or not something was going wrong at my end becuase the sub was used sparingly and there was no use of the rear speakers.

Also, you said that you`re not part of Reviewer anymore, may I take this opportunity to point out that Anil didn`t say you were. He said "the reviewer should write a reply," you are the reviewer aren`t you? Whether you`re part of Reviewer or not?

This doesn`t hold any water. You should still reply to any comments about your reviews (unless you don`t know about the thread in the first place) regardless. Granted you were never asked directly.

On your part it would be called, "professional courtesy". Your previous comments come across as churlish.

I think you`re reading too much into this, don`t flatter yourself. :-)

Fine, apologies to Jim and Anil for the slight insolence on my part, but in future please ask me directly and spare the "defence" comments. :)

And about the Anil/Rik arguments, it`s just something I`ve noticed recently, I`m not reading much into it at all...only an observation.

EDIT - No, sorry, I have not had chance to re-listen to `Pulp Fiction` yet, very busy at the mo. I will do soon, but yes, at this moment in time I stand by my review.

Well I don`t think Jim was trying to have a go but I have to say, seemingly every post Rik writes of late, Anil seems to have a snipe at.

JMHO!
