Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness... which ones to get?

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 23rd April 2003, 15:46

Need some advice, horror fans. Wanting to get all the Evil Dead films, but not sure which ones I should buy. If I`m right then the Evil Dead: Book of the Dead is the best one of the first film to get, right? So how about Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness? Or should I wait until there are some good releases of these films?

I see that the R1 on Play.com of the Book of the Dead is £10 more expensive than the R2 - any ideas why?

Thanks!

Hi

I`ll try to explain the best I can as I went through the whole process last year.

No idea why R1 book of the dead is so much more expensive, I think i`m right in saying there`s no difference between the two regions, only that R2 is PAL of course. It is the best version you`re gonna get.

Evil Dead 2 - The R1 Anchor Bay edition with Comms and a Doc on it is easily the best. There is a limited edition (50,000 copies) of this which comes in a big metal tin, if you`re a perfectionist.

Army of Darkness - The recent R2 Anchor Bay 2 disker is probably the best as it has the theatrical and directors cuts. Plus it can be picked up for about £8 from Play. There is however an R3 version that has a much better print, and a better 5.1 track.
See the differences here: http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/film_results_page.php?fid=1398

The good versions are out there waiting for you, happy hunting.

Will.

Thanks for your help.

Will look into this then, especially the Evil Dead 2 Limited Edition - any ideas where I can get this from by any chance?

RE: Evil Dead - the "Book of the Dead" edition has been re-released in the UK, minus the fancy packaging, in a standard amray case. The difference between the original release and the new BOTD edition is the wording of Evil Dead on the cover has gone from Blue to Red...

Okay, thanks. Think I`ll get the fancy limited edition as it looks brilliant - why don`t they release more like this?

Still haven`t been able to trace Evil Dead 2 Limited Edition tin yet...

Re: Evil Dead II tin, not sure how likely you`ll be able to find this, other than on eBay. The original Anchor Bay tins used to sell out quickly. This one has a nice 48-page colour booklet too. Very nice. :-)

Good luck hunting one down!

Anil

I can`t really shed too much light either - I got my tin from dvdboxoffice about a year ago (before I clued up and started using Play), but according to their website they`ll take orders for it but don`t know if or when they`ll fulfill it.

I agree with Anil your best bet is probably eBay.

Sorry I can`t help you further

CDWOW sell region 3 version of Army Of Darkness for £11.99 which as already mentioned above is the best print ( all others are from vhs master the region 3 from original print )

plus it is totally uncut as there is a scene that is cut by 2 seconds on every other version available, check out the link posted above for dvdcompare website.

What ending does the Region 3 have then? I`ve only ever seen the original and I`m incredibly intrigued to see the Directors Cut version?

Here is a link where they discuss the MGM region3 version vs others, and it is so much better than any Anchor Bay ones.

It can still be bought at www.cd-wow.com.hk for $167. Unfortunately the sterling has weakened against HK dollar so it will cost a bit more now, but if you still don`t have any Army of Darkness, this is worth every pound it cost over the anchor bay.
