Customs & Excise - How much if they catch ya?

YaZiN (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 9th January 2001, 14:12

I could find it myself but im lazy =)
How much do you have to pay if they catch the package on import?
Also is it a fixed charge for the whole package or individual items?

I`ve also heard on this forum somewhere that some of the DVD places in the US try to disguise the fact that the DVD is new by removing any wrapping on them. Anybody know which places do this?

if you phone up customs, they will send you a booklet explaining how it works.

Its something like £17.00/£18.00 - don`t order over that.

But you will not get customs charges from Play247.com (they gurantee it)

I phoned someone at their main offices, who told me there is a 3.5% charge on the total value + maybe a 17.5% vat charge on top of that - she gave me another number to ring about the vat, but i couldnt be arsed :-)

Why don`t you just order your R1 DVDs from the many on-line importers like www.play247. That way you don`t have to worry about any import duty at all.

Here is how the calculation is done:

e.g. you have to pay duty & VAT on some DVDs. The total cost of these DVDs, including local taxes, was £100 sterling.

The Duty Rate is 3.5% and VAT is 17.5%.
£100 x 3.5% = £3.50. This is AMOUNT A.
£100 + £3.50 = £103.50 x 17.5% = £18.11. This is AMOUNT B.
£3.50 + £18.11 = £21.61.
You would pay a total of £21.61.

This doesn`t apply if the total (incl. delivery) is less then £18.

Play247 is based in Jersey. No duty is payable on imports from Jersey but VAT is payable. If the amount if greater than £18 then Play247 pay the VAT up front so the price on the website is the price you pay.
