When the first season was released on DVD, I bought it for £30 - and liked it quite a lot. Happily, I planned to get the following seasons: until I saw their RRP`s. I sold the first season after watching it, thinking that if I couldn`t buy anymore, what was the point of keeping the first one?
Now, I want to get back into it, but looking on Play, the prices are still high. £34 for the first; then £60 for the subsequent series, each.
The R1 versions are £19 for the first; then £29 for the second and third (for once the Yanks are behind us with the releases).
So, is it worth getting R2 over R1 (are there any noticeable differences), or more importantly, is it worth investing in the whole Buffy saga? What are the episodes like post-first season, and what are the quality of the discs themselves?
Season 1 of Buffy was 12 episodes only
Subsequent Seasons had 24 episodes each, hence the price discrepancy.
I guess it`s all down to personal taste, but I feel that Buffy has been
on a continuous uphill slope, with each season getting better and better.
The current one showing on the beeb is class.
I don`t know what the difference between R1 and R2 is except that we are way ahead in releases here.
BTW Angel is even better
"Buffy has been on a continuous uphill slope, with each season getting better and better."
Couldn`t agree more mate!
On the whole R1 v R2 issue - as far as I`m aware there`s no difference in extras, although I don`t know about picture quality. Although the price of R1 is much more tempting www.choicesdirect.co.uk are doing seasons 2&3 of Buffy (and 1&2 of Angel) for £35 delivered (each) at the moment, which avoids any possibility of being hit by customs.
I agree that Buffy is class and though I`ve only got R1: season 1, I`m keen to get the successive boxsets, but only on R1 for three reasons:
1. from what I`ve read, there are some minimal cuts to the R2 version.
2. Price. As you can see, R1 is a bit cheaper, though the DVDs are somewhat behind the R2 releases.
3. there are extras not released on the R2 sets
Info c/o Rewind.
The speed of the R1 DVD releases don`t bother me since I can`t afford to spend loadsa wonga all at once.
R1 Season 1 is meant to have slighty better picture quality
R1 Season 2 has some additional interviews
R1 Season 3 got a bit messed up, it has additional extras, but is missing the Previously On intros and the first 2 episodes have the wrong title music. Avoid R2 UK as it`s is cut. R4 is uncut.
I have seasons 1,3 and 4 on region 4 dvd (they were the cheapest at the time) seasons 2 and 5 on region 2. It is the best thing on tv and the dvds are worth the money. I paid about £45 for seasons 3 and 4 and about £33 for seasons 2 and 5.
If you take a look on www.dvd.co.uk they are doing Buffy seasons two and three, and Angel seasons one and two for £39.99. Buffy season one is £23.99. I managed to get the Angel boxsets from them.
one other point region 2 is in widescreen on most of later series....
r1 will only b in 4:3 apparantly...

But Joss Whedon has gone on record as saying that he prefers Buffy in the 4:3 format and although the show is made in widescreen it is framed for Full Screen. Angel on the other hand is being made with Widescreen in mind and certainly from Season 3 onwards has been shown in this format in the States. Here on Sky 1 they just lop off the sides of the picture and it looks awful.
