Is it me or are the sales total pants for cheap DVDs - or what ?

HMV and Woolies are content to fob off Entertainment in Video discs at a tenner apiece and have the temerity to call them sale items (people beware - most EIV titles are Dolby ProLogic sound, with very few exceptions).

Virgin (2 for £25, limited crap ones at £9.99), Smiths (3 for £40 but all titles under £20 are included - best of a bad bunch) and Dixons (buy one at £19.99 get another half price) are going for so-called multi-buy bargains (aside from Dixons astoundingly generous two-day only special offer of the X Files Season 1 box set at £19.99, 75% of which were snaffled by staff once word got out) which are pretty poor.

MVC have a fairly reasonable selection of discs (eg Big Lebowski 7.99, Austin Powers 9.99, Carlito`s Way 11.99 etc) but as far as the January sales go the selection is VERY POOR.

Asda are flogging Warner £12.99 titles at, erm £12.99 and cheekily calling them sale items.

Has anyone actually found any half-decent sale items or are High Street sales just completely missing the point as far as DVD is concerned ? You can get VHS titles at around £3.99 (eg Saving Private Ryan £4.99 at Virgin).

Money-grabbing tight-wads.....

Yes i agree, but its the same old "Rip off UK" story isnt it. Even the official bods say "well, the price is based on what Jo public will pay !"
So we all trundle around our citys in hope of bargain or even fairly priced titles. Not a chance, and i always think it. . . wouldnt it be great if the whole population could for once, show some solidarity and stop buying them for a month or two, just to witness the manufacturers and retailers panic ? (Please support play247)
Whilst i am on my soapbox i would also like to make another area that winds me up. All the DVDs that are anything up to £20 that are 55 - 60 minutes long ! i.e. Trigger Happy. For £17.99 i want the whole series
not 2 episodes. So lets hope at least, although the show is good that this
title has dismal sales, then they might try harder and offer "VALUE FOR
MONEY" But this is England. Anyway, gotta go, have to buy some petrol.

What Britain needs is a market for pirated DVDs (controversy), but it could mean a kick in the teeth for the rip off companies. In Hong Kong you are looking at almost all titles on DVD are around £6 (however western films cost around similar to the US, and Stormriders cost me £25), with a selection now going for around £3.70ish. The reason is because of the wide availability of pirates which cost less than £3. Although personally I wouldn`t touch these discs with aten foot pole, it has to be said that a kick in the backside to the companies can mean a good thing, even if it means that something illegal has to rear its head (look at how piracy has affected games prices).

Have to agree Clayts, but as I found out on Christmas eve on my yearly pilgramage to the Glasgow Barras...my cousin (who owns his own video rental store, and has now moved to DVD too, and has a stall in the Barras) is selling original, unopened, sealed wrapped and loadsa titles DVD`s for £9.99 EACH!!!

No special offers or gimmicks, just a tenner a disc!!

And `cause he`s my cousin..there was of course, the "family discount" ROFL!!

I aint even buying them in store anymore...he`s cheaper than getting my staff discount!!
