How do I burn DVDs/?

bavzp (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 6th September 2002, 10:26

I have recently bought a DVD burner but I dont know how to burn a DVD onto DVD-R. I have been told it is possible if I remove the extra features material as it will not fit onto one DVD-R disk. What software do I use? how do I do it? Has anybody been able to do this?

I dont actually have a DVD burner yet ( not quite reached my price pint ) so the following is purley what ive learnt along the way.

Youll need to get hold of DECSS ( DVD Material is protected by CSS encryption to stop ppl form simply copying them like CDs ). The DECSS algorithm is in fact illegal ( i think ) so finding it will take some ( but not much ) diggiing. You can then use DECSS to "RIP" ( copy ) your DVD to your Hard Disc ( or if you have a fast enough machine stright to the DVD-R ) and then onto the DVD-R.

Hope that helps - Shout if there anything else :-)

http://www.vcdhelp.com is another good site for info on "backing up" DVDs, whether you want to copy them to VCD, SVCD, DiVX, or DVD-R.

Suffice to say you can only do a straight DVD-R backup if the original disc has a capacity of 4.7 Gigabytes or less. If it has more than that, you`ll either need to remove some of the content, spread it across 2 DVD-Rs (if you don`t mind changing discs half way through), or (as a last resort) re-compress the video so it takes up less space. The VCDHelp site will tell you how to do all of the above.
