PLAY.COM downgrading REGION ONE importance?

AlwaysDoubleDown (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 7th August 2002, 04:56

I noted that it is a lot tougher to get to region one dvds on their website now - although obviously still possible.

Seems like a worrying shift in emphasis. Any thoughts?

sorry if this is yesterday`s news!

cheers

Can`t say I`ve noticed it myself. They`re constantly advertising their `Region 1-ness` and I`ve just had a peek at the site and we still have the old Region drop down menu on the left and the Region1/2 tabs at the top.

Don`t worry about it! :-)

R1 does seem to have vanished from the front page and is now at the bottom of the search options.

I was always more annoyed that you can`t search R1 and R2 at the same time for a title. It would make comparisons easier.

Maybe they are trying to make it less obvious that they sell R1, but for who`s benefit?

Me too. All they`d have to do is leave the search term in the search entry box when they display the results, then you could alter the dropdown from R1 to R2 (or vice versa), and away you go!

Found this at :

It basically says:
"I know a few of you are reading wondering about PLAY.COM. For those that aren`t too sure what I`m talking about, let me bring you up to speed. At some point last week, Play stopped advertising Region 1, and effectively relegated it to a secondary item. Many people were up in arms about this, but guys, I`m sorry, the simple answer is economics. In dealing with the major labels, (the BUENA VISTA`S, PARAMOUNTS and WARNER BROS of this world) Play was finding itself in a unique and contradictory position. It was asking these labels for the best deals on their titles, while importing the same title 6 months earlier from the states. Obviously, the labels don`t want importation of DVD period, so, as I understand it, they were asked not to import, and Play, I believe have accepted these terms. BUT, fear not, I can`t say exactly, because you never know who is reading, (probably no-one) but Play and Region 1 DVD are a long way from finishing..................."

So what this means, who knows. Definitely the R1 option is at the bottom of the drop down bar, rather than the top, but its all still there....hopefully it won`t mean the end, as they have been the most reliable and cheap place to get discs up till now.

it seems to be part of a site wide redesign..
the login page and some of the account pages have changed as well.
Also..they seem to have changed (or lost !) some passwords, mine wouldn`t work and when they e-mailed me what they had as my password, it was an obvious generic one ( i.e. a letter and loads of numbers).
while having to re-enter my password ain`t a problem, it is a bit of a pain !!

Who`s been buying region 1 discs from them? They are so much more expensive than most other retailers like dvdsoon, absound, dvdimport, dvdboxoffice, cdwow etc.
Ok for region 2 but I would never pay £17.99 for a region 1 disc anymore!
Maybe demand was down so they are pushing the region 2 discs more?
