Scratched DVD’s- anything I can do?

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 23rd June 2002, 22:35

Can someone recommend a way to fix scratched DVD's?
I lent a family member my copy of Billy Elliot (Which I hadn't even watched yet) & its come back so badly scratched it won't play.
The only thing I've ever seen was called something like spin doctor, but I can't remember where I saw it or how much it was. Or any other gizmo, I don't care which one, as long as it works.
I've got a few CD's that won't play either, so it won't be used just the once. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

There are things you can get, but I can`t remember the names of any. Best to ask at a hifi shop I guess. The best one I`ve seen was demonstated on QVC the shopping channel. It was a liquid that you rubbed on and it filled the scratches in. The guy gave a good demo by playing a CD then taking it out and putting big scratches on it with a key. He put it back in to prove it wouldn`t play, then took it out and treated it with this liquid....it played perfect again afterwards.

You might find it on the QVC web site, but they only tend to stock products in during their on air selling period.

They sell skip doctor at virgin. Works very well.
Not cheap though. If i remember correctly about 20-30 quid. My mate had one and he managed to repair my american pie disk that was peppered with scratches and had not played for ages.

There is one called "slap the family member who did this untill they replace it" If this product can not rectify the problem it garentees to stop any loaning of any property to said family member thus stoping the problem at the source.

I hope this is of some help.

All the best,

Andrew.

I have succesfully "wiped out scratches" by using "T-Cut" paint restore
or other similar mildly abrasive pastes or creams for metal eg my mums "Brasso". Using a very small amount and a very light polishing motion the scratched surface can be restored. The whole surface needs to be treated not just the scratch, as the thickness of the protective layer will become varied. Make sure all residue is cleaned from disc.

Try it , it does work.
