Lookin to start out on the first rung of DVD ladder.(better late than never) Need cheap player that can be hacked for multiregion discs. Seen the Goodmans and Orion players in Tescos - any good? Open to suggestions.
I am new to dvd`s.
I bought mine from Tesco £ 99.49 - Dansai 852
& pleased with it so far.
It can be hacked for multiregion & to disable macrovision by remote control.
Some nice ones at Scan.co.uk and are advertised on the banners on this site. Some also have biult in amps so you can get your hands on a cheap home cinema kit that wil be excellent for someone new to DVD.
Also Multiregion and macro free.
the cheapest dvd player i have seen is a cyberhome on the richer sounds web site. www.richersounds.co.uk. and it is a multiregion player.
Avoid the Cyberhome. I bought one and it developed faults very quickly. OK they can all do that. However Cyberhome policy is that they ship a replacemet one to you - not a new machine but one that they have had to replair in the past. Cyberhome tried this stunt three times (each time promising it would be a new machine). In the end I had to get a refund.
I`m now in the same boat as you and looking for a replacement.
Beware you don`t get too stuck on the idea of mistaking cheapness for quality. While a lot of people don`t have problems with sub £100 players, a lot of others experience compatability issues with certain discs.
I often think that you take more of a gamble with cheap players and would recommend saving a little more to get something more decent up to £200.

Just my 2c worth... :-)

Well, I must defend Cyberhome - my 512 has been faultless. I think the problem with the cheap machines is that quality control is poor, and you *can* get a good one, but it`s a lottery.
But, to follow Anil`s point, I do sometimes wish I`d gone for a better player - one reason being that I`d now like to use the DVD player to play CDs, but the Cyberhome doesn`t sound too good doing that (mind you, I`m comparing it with a v good Marantz). However, I bought my DVD player as a cheap intro, with the idea of building up some DVDs before spending a load on a player. In a couple of years time, I`ll replace it with the latest dog`s doohahs machine.
In defence of the cheaper players, buying an expensive model isn`t entirely without risk (I pity the poor devils who spent £800 on a Pioneer DVL-909 four years ago, only to be plagued by lip-sync problems). Also, for a newbie, spending £100 is less of a gamble - if you decide that DVD is for you, you can always buy a better model at a later date.

Hey guys
If you`re not looking to spend a great deal of money on the player, I`d certainly have to recommend the LG DVD-4710. It`s available in Dixons/Currys for about £139, and its multiregion hackable.
I bought this player about six months ago & it`s fantastic. The menus are simple but quite well featured, and the sound & picture quality is grade A for a budget player.
Also, I`ve never had any trouble with so-called "problem" discs like the Matrix.
All in all an excellent player & a steal for £139.
