Budget DVD player

Harveyss (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 19th December 2001, 22:20

Hi, im looking into buying a budget dvd player. It has to be able to easily be multiregion, and preferably play cd-rs etc. And also, preferably DTS, dolby surround at least.

I was looking at the LG DVD4710. It has DTS, and is hackable, and only £99.99 (+ VAT - so < £120), but it doesnt play cd-rs apparently.

Next up was Sharp DV740H. This is a little pricier, 129.99 + vat. But what put me off is it looks hard to hack, especially as i currently have no cd writer.

Could anyone give more information, possible players are Goodmans GDVD124, Philips DVD612, JVC XV-522SL. But if anyone knows of any other, better players that are not listed, then please let me know. Any help would be much appreciated.

I might decide to not worry about the cd-r playback and go for the LG, but i will wait for any comments.

Thanks;

Harvey S-S

This thread would probably be better on the Hardware Forum, Harvey.

There are plenty of £100 machines doing the rounds at the minute - eg Cyberhome ADL528 (Richer Sounds/WHSmiths), Dansai 852 (Tesco - but running out), Reoc A3 (Safeway) to name a few....

If you`re hell bent on the Sharp player, I don`t mind burning the file to CD for you for free - get in touch : styalc[at]moc.054aera (the Sharp unit is made by Sampo so is a featured player at my website - http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/players/dv740.htm - some nice screenshots there by the way !

Hi there,

I am in the process of buying a budget DVD player, ideally one that can be converted to multi region or atleast region free. I have narrowed my selection down to choice of two.

The REOC A5 on special at Safeway for £130.00 or the Pacific PDVD 1000 by ASDA at £100.

I am aware of the hack for the REOC A5 and given the spec ie. 5.1 Dolby and plays CD R it would seem a reasonable buy.

Bur what of the Pacific PDVD 1000. In it`s favour ASDA offer a 3 year warranty at no extra cost (can`t be bad), but I know very little of it`s performance or if it can be converted.

I am grateful to the ASDA assistant who advised I check out your website. Do you have any opinion or reviews on these models and do you know of any hack for the Pacific.

Yours faithfully

Rob Jenkins

There`s actually a lot about the Reoc A5 that they don`t boast about - eg it can playback home made miniDVDs, all formats of VCD, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and MP3s, tho` not, sadly DVD-Rs.

Nice player, and a good seller in it`s US version, the Sampo DVE611 (and that one doesn`t come with a decoder either).

Don`t know a great deal about the Pacific player, sorry - but then I would be biased towards a Sampo anyway :-) http://www.area450.com
