Obviously not the best but its cheap to start with and the map/safety camera updates are free via ViaMichelin who product the mapping I think!
Ordered one just to have a play, video demo
:D

The software is probably the Via Michelin one which will be a wee bit out of date now.
As to how good the software and the Zire is...the Zire is a painful piece of a PDA but if it`s only being used for Satnav then you`ll be very pleasantly surprised.
Maps are pretty reasonable, mega easy to follow and you can plan routes on the PC too (not many I know allow that, PC and PDA route planning). It`s pretty quick at turning with you in suburban streets and TBH the only reason mine ended up going back was it couldn`t do half of what I wanted due to being PalmOS,
(When I bought mine it was £225 and it came with Kirrio GPS receiver and ViaMichelin routing software)
Good vent mount although big, easy to clip in but sometimes a wee bit fiddly but a good receiver all round and good large clear screen.
At £55 I`d say it`s a no brainer for anyone wanting a reasonable sat nav and can handle the couple of years old mapping.
(That`s assuming it hasn`t been updated yet....the maps were out of date when I had it but that may have changed now.)

Website is fine, got my Palm delivered this morning. ViaMichelin are offering a FREE map update for this unit as well as FREE "safety" camera program and updates which I didnt think was bad.
Its not the best PDA but for under 60 notes......... ;)

It may not be the Zire I think it is, but in case it is watch out for the blue to start flaking off, I rubbed it all off in the end giving a much more pleasing matt silver finish before giving it to Miss Demeanor a couple of years ago.
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
I hate answering the phone at work - It disturbs my sleep.

Do these give verbal/voiced directions as well as the map? Sorry if this is a stupid question. Cheers, Roger.

I bought an iRiver from them a few weeks ago - no problems. It was described as a factory refurb, but was near as dammit good as new.
You`re right, though, that`s not the world`s greatest website.

Thanks for that info Dusty. Roger
So just to confirm, you could use this handheld in a strange city and it`ll tell you where you are and where to go?
