Dell are currently advertising a cheap Laptop. Inspiron 1300 - Celeron 1.5 GHz, 256Mb, 40GB, 14.1", Combo Drive. This offer is only available by `phone - So that they can convince you to upgrade.
However a similar deal is available online, one which offers better value.
Look for E-Value proposition N04135b, there are several ways to get there, but if you enter this code into both of the E-Value search boxes it works.
Change the Suport option to 90 days C&R, you can then have this system for £339 inc VAT and delivery. This is basically the same as the TV advertised product but..
You now have a 15.4 "" display rather than 14.1"
DVD writer rather than Combo-drive.
You can also get 4.5% (of the ex-VAT price) back via Quidco.
MUCH better value.
I would also upgrade the battery for £11.75
The spare battery at £58.75 costs a lot less than most brands will charge for a spare.
This is a very similar deal to one of a few weeks ago, so I apologise if it bores anyone, I just thought people might like to know it is around again. It is a godd deal for a basic Laptop.
Bytemaster
>:( Ordered one last 2 weeks ago Friday but thought I had missed the offer. Sales person said he could do at offer price and then proceed to ask if I wanted to upgraded various things. Took the increased screen size and the 3 year at home service.
Invoice confirmation arrived only to see vat and freight charges have been added.
Now correct me if I'm wrong but advert says incl vat and shipping.
After the crap of press this and press that, I am told that because I added extras! I lose the vat and shipping freeness.
Tried contacting them today with no luck( press this press that then music then dead line).
Quite frankly I have not opened the box but if I'm having grief like this trying to resolve things at the beginning, what if things breakdown. I will be informing them of the distance selling rule and if they don't resolve to my satisfaction they may as well have it back.
So to sum up bytemaster in theory nice offer but too much underhand going on.
On the flipside...
I`m using my Inspiron 1300 now that I ordered last time this was around - couldn`t be happier with the machine, the price and the service from Dell. I ordered online and got the larger screen and 6 cell battery for just under £330 (and I got Quidco commission).
It`s mainly a desktop replacement but I do travel occasionally so it also makes a great portable DVD player - 3 hours of battery life!
"Every time I learn something new it pushes some old stuff out of my brain!"
Rossington
I have no doubt it is a good buy, it`s just the way something has been added that says it was free in black and white in the national press and then the hassle of trying to explain to robots that you don`t do that in this country unless it is made clear at point of sale (misled comes to mind). >:(
If you order via the web site, as suggested, the pricing retains the VAT and shipping inclusive nature.
Dell`s order confirmations and Invoices normally show a carriage price and of course must,by law, indicate the VAT. However they will normally show a discount for the carriage cost and the VAT exclusive price for the goods.
If the total of your invoice is more than you expected I suspect that the tele-sales people must have changed the package that they sold you. I don`t like dealing with the people at Dell as they are so strongly driven to make you upgrade. I assume that the current offer is only available by `phone for just this reason. That is why I posted the alternative offer which is web-available.
I recently exchange eight emails with a Dell person, I was trying to confirm some warranty details, all he was interested in doing was trying to get me to upgrade!!!
Hi all,
this looks like a great offer. I`m just worried about the graphics capability of the laptop. Is it good enough to watch DVD`s / XVids? How about running something like Windowblinds?
To those who have already bought one, any surprises?
hi,
i tried to oreder on on the phone,
the girl could not speak english very well, and kept pushing me to buy the 3 year warranty
as she said it only comes with 90 days, i said thats not true, as in the UK you get 1 year.
anyhoo, she keeps pushing the 3 year thing, so i say, no thanks, bye.
she phones back! saying she talked to someone and i can have a 3 year warranty for the price of a 2 year. i tell her no, she gets all pushy again, i say just forget about it.
i was happy to pay £399, but they just push and push for a bigger sell.
so went to woolworths and got there £399 deal.
This doesn`t sound right at all. Didn`t the sales person confirm the final price with you?
How long have you had the laptop?
There`s been a lot of talk about this Dell offer on MSE on this thread e.g. "don`t forget to ring and tell them you`re not sure about keeping it within the first week after receiving it..... then ask them for a discount..... I got £30 off my £360 (upgraded from £299) one"
Final price confirmed even wrote it down. Don't want to jump on the not speaking English bandwagon (Youngsters speaking a form of slang that no one but them understands because it is cool :/ ) and they are born here!
Just took delivery the end of this week, unopened as yet because if they give me any waffle will tell them to take back, and contacted credit card company Saturday to keep them informed of dispute.
