Philips DVD Recorder - £129.99 @ Sainsburys

There was piles of Philips DVD Recorders in the Sainsburys at Ashton, Bristol yesterday at £129.99. I think the model was DVDR3305 - any good anybody ??
I know it`s not the cheapest DVD recorder on the market but surely that`s not a bad price for a Philips.

£1.50 with a packet of Cornflakes is not a bad price for philips.

I don`t own one, but ask anyone with any knowledge on the subject & they will tell you that you can`t beat the Panasonic, which is available for just about the same price.

I`ve got a Philips and its fine - that sounds like a good price to me.

Yes, there`s a lot of argument in favour of the Panny but i wanted a simple machine to replace my VHS and it does the business. Philips are dvd+ format which means you can play the recorded discs on more other machines than a Panasonic recording which is in dvd- format. Also Panasonics I believe cannot easily be made multi-region whereas a Philips is dead simple - a major factor for me as my discs are all different regions.

PaulJB... wrong wrong wrong. philips are notoriously unreliable. The dvd+ system is not the standard format. All DVDs you buy are in the - standard & the - standard is more compatable. The Panasonic will record in the + system as well as the -. My Panasonic was bought multi region & at the time was cheaper than Curries. Panasonic are highly reliable, philips are notoriously unreliable.

Got to agree with Paull about the panasonic got mine at Richer Sounds just before xmas Multiregion and paid £118 +coppers (they beat the cheapest web price I found by £10) My Phillips dvd player was very picky with discs.

PaulL,

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The dash format was specifically designed for writeable DVDs and not for "all DVDs you buy". They are not used by commercial DVDs like your thread infers. If they were then they would not play on DVD players that only accept the + format.

For people who blindly say one is better and do not know the difference, here is an explanation:-

DVD dash is officially recognised by the DVD forum and so can have the proper DVD logo. DVD + is the competing standard led by companies like Philips. Neither is superior to the other. What the consumer chooses depends on what their players/recorders can handle although in future one of the formats may become a standard but definitely not as of today! If you want an explanation of the physical differences (which defines the format of the writeable discs) then I can explain further.

So what format is commercial DVD? It`s neither because they are not produced by using a laser to burn the organic dye. The surface of these discs are actually "stamped".

Good enough reason to give it a miss then.

& I stand by what I said.

So you still believe commercial DVDs are burnt by laser onto organic dyes? Fair enough! The DVDs I buy certainly are not copies.

The 2 formats both have advantages and although Philips were one of the consortium who developed the + format does not have any bearings on the quality of their drives (the reliability of which I cannot comment on). Panasonic do manufacture the +R format discs too even if the format was jointly developed by Philips and others. The 2 formats both have such strong features that Sony actually are a member of both of the consortiums (possibly due to lessons learnt from the Betamax format).

The person you churlishly told "wrong wrong wrong" also got it wrong but it`s not good to make such judgements, especially when you don`t know what you are talking about, even if you really do believe commercial DVDs are in the dash format and burnt using laser DVD writers and somehow are playable on machines that only support the + format!

I bought the Philips DVDR610 last summer when it was @ £99.99 in Sainsbury`s and its crap.

Randomly turns on / off, stops recording, ejects Disc tray.

I think its some incompatability with the Remote frequencies, as it mostly happens when i`m using my Sky Remote to change Sky Chans.

Personally im trying to stay away from Philips DVDR Standalones, and i`m looking for a second, but dont want a cheap Asda one, so will hold off.
