problems with the £60 woolies dvd players

mksprior (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 20th June 2001, 14:17

Is anybody else who bought one of these proline players in the recent offer experiencing problems? Mine causes one dvd to go all blocky and distorted, and there seems to be a constant flickering throughout many dvds. Also the picture sort of bends in one corner...
Are there any alternative explanations for these faults other than the player being faulty?

thanks

Mine seems to be a little bit tempremental. It froze on the FBI warning on The Crow Collectors Edition. Then I tried Rio Bravo which started playing and went blocky and froze after a few secs. Both were region 1. The previous evening it played Crouching Tiger Region 3 O K. So I thought I`d try a region 2 - Cross of Iron started playing but in French with French subs. I changed them back on the menu and it was alright. Everything else I tried after that played O K including The Crow. I haven`t tried Rio Bravo again yet. I wasn`t sure about the flicker I wondered if it was something to do with macrovision or because I was watching region 1 on Pal setting. I don`t think my old TV can handle nstc because the picture was B&W. My son later played X-Men r1 and didn`t mention any probs.

Monkey, I`d say it`s almost definately your telly. The telly can`t cope with a NTSC (Amrican) signal, I`d guess.

Mine plays the R1 of toy story 1 and 2 plus highlander fine, plus the R4 of the matrix.

I agree with WPKenny, check your TV

I`ve come to the conclusion mine needs to warm up for a few minutes. I`ve been trying r1 Rio Bravo 1st time it froze on titles after few secs. 2nd time broke up a lot on the start of the titles. 3rd time did the same. 4th time played normally with good picture.

All the people having problems with this dvd player should know its a UK make player made by curry/dixons or comet one of these. The point is the player is hackable to be made multiregion but cant handle region 1 discs well and will not play RCE discs at all. For the £60 price its reasonable buy but dont expect the quality of a reputable brand name from it.
If u people bothered reading reviews on it then u would find they are rubbish players, they usually take 20 secs to load up a disc. The reason some discs play all blocky or even freeze up is due to the cheap laser which cant handle dvd`s when the player heats up after a little while. Region 1 discs spin faster than region 2 discs this is another reason it cant handle region 1 discs so well. I hope this info helps, I know an awful lot about dvd players so if u are thinking of buying one or having problems with ur exisiting ones then feel free to email me: 2002_abnh[at]moc.oohay and I will be happy to help.
