PIRATES - AVOID!!!!!
RE: why R0 DVDs are so cheap???
I have watched Manhunter (first in the Silence of the Lambs series), which is a region 0 dvd (its at play247). Its just like a normal dvd (special features, audio setup etc) but can be played on ANY dvd player. Most of the other region 0 dvds ive seen are music ones though. I do agree with elephant stone though, i wouldn`t trust the auctions either.

Although there are many legitimate DVD releases (mainly those from smaller studios) that are Region 0, the cheap region 0s you`ve come across in auctions are probably pirate DVDs.
Personally, I would avoid buying pirates. That`s not because I`d feel guilty about cheating the poor wickle studios out of their (not very) hard-earned cash, but simply because they`re poor value for money compared to the real thing. They invariably have worse picture quality, and fewer (or no) special features, when compared to the genuine article; and at around £9, they`re not *that* much cheaper than proper DVDs ordered from the likes of EzyDVD, for example.

RE: why R0 DVDs are so cheap???
I have never bought a pirate DVD, but am open minded and I fail to see how these can be inferior to the original if they have been directly ripped from an original DVD. Surely it`s like copying a CD, it`s a digital format meaning there is no loss of quality i.e. copying a Playstation game. As I see it, it would probably be only the packaging that`s inferior. The only time the DVD would likely to be of crap quality would be if you bought a film such as The Phantom Menace which has not yet been released on DVD yet, so has therefore been ripped from lower quality source. However, the main reason I`ve not bought them is that I think £9 is a rip-off, when you can pick most originals up for around £10-£12 if you are prepared to shop around.
They wouldn`t be inferior if they *were* direct copies, but they`re not!
Instead, the pirates cut corners by squeezing dual-layer releases onto a single-layer "silver", upping the compression (hence, worse picture quality) and losing most of the special features.

Thanks for the info Mike, I thought there must be a catch. I`ll stay well away from them.
Ebay is a great place to get hold of films which aren`t available in the UK such as Hong Kong action films which are usually region 0. These are not pirates.
the pirates tend to be those which have been released in UK, USA or Japan which are strong on region coding. ie - while HK films are likely to be r0, the Matrix et al are not, so stay away from cheap versions (r0) of those
