DVD/VCD Please tell what is the difference?
I am quite new to the DVD scene and I am quite confused what the difference is between the two. For example quality of picture, extra features etc.
RE: DVD/VCD Please tell what is the difference?
The difference in the two is mainly quality. They`re compressed in different ways. Also they are on different types of disk. VCD is on CD-Rom and DVD movies are on DVD-Rom. The difference between a CD and a DVD is basically the amount of information you can squeeze onto it now that technology has become more accurate.
DVD movies come with extras on them because of that difference in storage space. They are higher quality movies also because of this added space.

Quite right Kenny. You also forgot the most importnat thing - picture and audio quality. Generally straight VCDs (as opposed to SVCDs) only have two channel sound, and picture quality akin to VCR. SVCDs can have 5.1 sound, but very rarely.
Stick to DVD if you want all the gubbins, extras an` all - unless you buy cheapo Warner products - crap cases and minimal extras. Watched `Fallen` the other day and it boasted a `Making Of` feature on the box - basically three pages of text which were knocked up by a bored housewife in Slough - I could have written better ! Yet DVDs such as `12 Monkeys` will have an hour and a half `making of` feature. Crazy world we live in, kerrrraaaaazy I tells ya...
A couple of VCD related sites here
VCD is poorer quality but depends on the films but Star Wars and Back To Future can be found on VCD and it does not degrade like VHS. VCD is useful if you are impatient or want a particular rare title.

I`m sorry, you are wrong with this. SVCD is a better improve format over the standard version 2.0 or 3.0 VCD. But that applies to visual quality only, the audio is still 2 channel stereo or dual language mono.
SVCD is currently a hot format in china and hongkong, but not all over asia. Therefore, SVCD software is not widely available in the market. VCDs currently sold by online retailers are not 100% SVCD, but SVCD player compatible.
This thread doesn`t appear to have a bargain in it - please continue the debate over on the Software Forum.
Cheers (oops - I posted on it too !!!)
