somerfield dvd bargain!

abbynat (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 6th May 2004, 22:54

:) whilst in my local somflds, noticed an akura dvd player for 29.98
ridiculous price for a super slim machine, that plays everything inc. pcture discs dvd + dvd r etc even boasts progressive scan and high definition output, whatever that means.but it sure looks the business! am quite tempted at the price even though i have 3 dvd machines inc. the computer.but 30.00 just to get a machine with progressive scan is very tempting! :)
oops!sorry if im a bit late with this as its already been mentioned in the hardware forum.

I believe this is also available from Safeways. Got one for a friend; looks great works great and it`s region free out of the box (well it worked with the R1 and R2 discs I tested it with). There`s a rather small pic on the sommerfields site here

Does it play VCD disks, couldn`t see that anywhere?
If it does, sounds like just the bargain player I am looking for. :)

hmmm.....i`d be a bit wary about buying one. i work for somerfield and the last time we had those in stock, customers were returning them by the truckload.

Why were they being returned? Faulty?..Crap picture?...

maybe there was a lot of faulty machines in one particular batch; a member of Somerfield staff had to go and get one from stock for me and he told me they only had one returned last time and they must have sold over 100. Or perhaps it`s a problem with having to point the remote directly at the DVD player (I`ve noticed some people always point remote controls at the TV)

"Does it play VCD disks" - I haven`t checked this myself but some one in the Hardware forum said it did. Look for the Akura ADV147As thread in Hardware forum.

One small point but it comes complete with scart lead which is a nice touch.

I have had to return mine.
It seemed to play OK for a while but after a while i got pixelisation. My neighbour who has bought one though has had no problems with his.
