FWD - Free calls to US/Canada

nridgway (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 22nd December 2003, 14:45

Just got this email:

When you use your Free World Dialup account, today through the end of the year, you can now place calls into the USA and Canada, for free, by dialing *1 and the areacode and number.

We hope you are able to take advantage of this special promotion and take the time to tell others about it as well.

Best Wishes for the Holiday season,

The Free World Dialup Team

You will need to set you PC up with the software, mic and speakers/headphones and I think it needs a broadband connection.

Yeah, this system has the same limitations as other free VoIP solutions, in that you can only make calls to other users of the system, i.e. you cannot call a normal landline, the person you are calling must also be running the software, and you talk through the computer. Dont get me wrong, systems like this, and skype are great, I have mates in Australia and America, and I talk to them on skype, but it is not calls to POTS yet...

At the moment you can call US/canada landlines for free (i`ve only tryied a fax number but it seems to work). All you have to do is put *1 in front of the number the area code and the phone number. Le me know if anyone else has used it properly.
