Philips LX8000SA - 199GBP at Currys

testbloke (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd December 2003, 08:06

Got one of these to finish my new room system off, had been looking at Panasonic and TDK system, both around 300quid in the stores but 220 quid on line.
Saw the Philips in Currys, went home to check :
What Home Cinema editors choice reveiwed Sep `03, commented "now available for only 500gbp and hard to beat at that price" Therefore at 199gbp has to be bargain of the century ! Best price I could find on line was 350gbp.
This has SACD as well as DTS, dolby digital and prologic, be quick though as only a few left and a word of warning - try and get one boxed as the speaker cones are not protected so those on demo tend to have been poked with fingers !

I just bought one, and the picture is amazing, havent been able to test the sound as its 1pm, and it took forever to screw all the bits together, and the best part was there was a 10% off sign on the player so I got it for £179 :D, currys have another 2-3 left in the store I bought it, the only thing that is a dissapointment is the lack of bass and treble controls, but hey I cant complain at that price :D.

Also on my hitachi tv if I plug it into the RGB scart socket the screen will stay black even if the player is in standby, so I have to disconnect it to use tv, any ideas?

Now thats a deal - got one myself.

Anyone know which hack works - please let me know if you have successfully applied a hack. I was a bit concerned as some seem to turn off the 5.1 and that rather defeats the point of buying one of these bargains.

Great spot - thanks.

Have not yet set this up ! Hope to do so tonight. As I am placing the unit next to my bed and the screen is on the far away wall I had to get some long scart, audio and speaker cables. That lot cost me nearly half what the system did - much to the wives amusement ... not !
Anyways, back to the thread, I have printed out the hack as per this site, noticed comments re losing 5.1, but think this was the earlier models only, if it does happen and you are desperately want it multiregion, techtronics will chip it but charge 90 quid :-(

I popped into Curry`s and they had one for £199 but it was the display model which had had the speaker cones pushed in. I remembered seeing one in Dixons so I trundled off there. It was £199 and they had 10% off managers special - plus a £10 voucher if you spend under £200 and £20 voucher if you spend over £200. I don`t normally go for warranties but the sales bloke offered me 15% off if I took out the 3 year warranty - which took it to £208 for a brand new boxed one, 3 years warranty and £20 Dixons voucher to spend next year. I think the voucher offer runs out tomorrow.

I`ve only just put it together but it sounds good!

Nice one, when I got mine Dixons were still 360GBP and that was with 120GBP off ! AFAIK Comet are still around the 340GBP mark.
Connected it all up last night - really impressive, especially at that price

I cannot get the hack to work - it just refuses to open the tray until you switch off and on again.

I have tried both the 111 and 221 part of the code as I`m not sure if that refers to the original region of the machine or the region you want to play but neither work.

Any one able to tell me which works on theirs please??

Wow what a great bargin...Had to stretch the plastic but far too good to pass up...
extra 10% off the price as well on managers special at Stockton branch...179.97GBP only three left as far as I know...Team Valley Gateshead were out of stock...and only two left in Newcastle...got em to check on the puter.Just got it set up and well impressed...excellent picture and sound....although I dont think the speaker design is that great (unprotected speaker cones and young kids dont mix well)...I cant wait to ramp them up to full volume tomorrow. :D

Finally got the hack to work by cutting out some of the steps recommended but it disables the 5.1 and has to be re-hacked back to play a region 2 disc ( a real pain as I have a 50/50 mix of region 1 & 2 discs )!!

Also the hack to re-instate 5.1 also resets it back to a region 2 machine - darn.

Decided to have it chipped, but hey still a great bargain as the unit just ooooozes quality, in fact my local Currys manager decided to take their last one as he was so impressed when he saw what I had got from his store for £180.

Tried the `one for all` hack - worked first time and no messing about switching between regions or re-setting after 25 region changes.

Very very pleased.
