Hmm,

I fancied one of these 50 quid jobs. But all the cheap DVD players on the Richer web site are marked as `unavailable on the web` or something like that. Phoned my nearest store to be told that they didn`t have any and hadn`t had any and maybe I could buy it off the web site!

Looks like you have to live near one of the larger stores to have any chance of getting hold of one of these. :-(

Did read somewhere that these machines suffer from afew problems with VCD playback and dvd layer change, still at a shade off 50 quid who cares!

i picked up the 8080b (theres also a 8080a version, not sure what the difference is?) whilst in France for £70. it works great with cdr, cdrw, mp3`s & vcds. admititly its had a few problems with a couple of svcds (about 1 in 20) but i simply reburn the mpg file back to cdr using nero and the problem was solved. i havent tried a dvdr on it as i dont have dvd burner but it can be made region free with the remote hack. in my opinion its a very basic player but worth £50-£70.

if anyones interested the player is made by www.fillony.com

Thanks to Labman who emailed me to say that they are now `back in stock` on the web site.

However, given that the delivery charge is a tenner and they come without a remote (which would probably be another tenner for a universal one), that brings the price up to 70 quid. I don`t know whether you get a scart lead with it

I am tempted just to go into Argos and get one of the Alba £70 models, again I dont know if it comes with a lead.

Does anyone know whether either of these does come with a scart lead?

And which is the better deal?

Thanks for the help everyone!

WARNING - Richer Sounds Rip Off!

blackpudding (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 27th August 2002, 09:31

I ordered a Limit DVD 8080 from Richer Sounds last week when the advert and order page read `includes remote control`. If you are wondering why it now says `no remote control` its because I reported the advert to trading standards and they told them to change it!

The `graded` tag also means secondhand, returned, repaired and sold to me with scratches and NO accessories. Richer Sounds refuse to refund me as it is a `sale item` and say I can buy a remote for an additional £25 but that the fact the advert said it was supposed to have come with one is just `unfortunate`. Also Multi-Region is a joke - its not available unless you have the remote.

Save your money and buy from a reputable dealer and remember to pay by credit card - I`ve already put in a claim for compensation (Richer Sounds refuse to answer my emails and put me on hold if I phone). If this is what a `Which Web Trader` has as an idea of customer service and sales of goods act 1979 (I work in a solicitors practice) then I see it as a warning!

As for Richer Sounds reputation in the trade for selling S/H and repaired goods as new - its well deserved. As Trading Standards told me - If its too good to be true it probably is.

I also ordered the limit player from the internet and it took the full 7 days to arrive - I phoned them up to ask what was going on and they said that they had sold out before they could update the website. BUT - they did honour the deal and sent me an alternative player for the same price - it is nothing spectacular but it works fine and has got all the same features as the limit player. (Inc Remote) It would have been nice if they had taken the initiative and phoned me to check that I was happy with the replacement but at the end of the day - it has only cost £50 and I am not displeased in any way shape or form.

End of rant - I do believe that richer sounds are a fair retailer and as long as you read the details of the products that you are looking at carefully you should not have any trouble with them.
