RE: DVD-RAM to DVD-R?

Cheers EmilyHoward that`s really helpful! :)

However, being I`m a bit dim, I`m slightly confused by the second posting in the thread you highlight - the respondent said (I think?) they were able to successfully use Nero for the copy... but I`m probably missing something essential here. It will probably make obvious sense when I try it for myself - just waiting for a drive for my PC that will read DVD-RAM! ;)

Cheers,

Nick

RE: True Lies (R2) - sound problems

I had the same problem with a couple of other discs. Check out this thread, it might help:

RE: Band of Brothers

Great show - watched first two episodes on video again this evening. DVD release early next year.

RE: R1 Compatability with Sony Trintron Wega TV`s

Wurzel,

I have a Sony WEGA widescreen TV (KV28DS20U) which I have had for over a year. This shows Region 1 pics (from my Sony DVD735 player) without a hitch. I would be very surprised if your newer TV wasn`t also compatible with the American system. The manual should confirm this.

RE: LG3350 - Do i buy it from dabs or techtronics?

I found Techtronics service first-class, including follow-up enquiries from me via e-mail. They have always got back to me within 24 hours with very helpful advice.

RE: AV Receiver/Amp for £200 or less?

Cheers M8, I`ll definately check it out!

RE: AV Receiver/Amp for £200 or less?

Drunkstudent,

Took your advice and checked out Sherwood 6106 on Richer Sounds website. You are right - looks good!

Does anyone else have experience of this equipment?

RE: AV Receiver/Amp for £200 or less?

Cheers, I`ll check this out. What did you end up buying?

AV Receiver/Amp for £200 or less?

Does anyone know of a reasonable AV receiver/amp for up to £200? I have a Sony DVD735 which has a built in 5.1 decoder and want to use it, so a receiver/amp with 5.1 inputs would probably do. Sony`s STR-DE245 might fit the bill - looking at the Techtronics site, this only offers prologic, but has 5.1 inputs and is cheap (£125+VAT). Does anyone have experience of using this setup? Alternatively, the DE445 (£165+VAT) and DE545 (£220+VAT) are more expensive but have DTS/Dolby 5.1 decoders on board.

Any alternatives or experience with these machines gratefully appreciated!

RE: Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

Yes, when its in "Wide" mode. I wouldn`t have noticed it at all, except I was watching "Thunderbirds Are Go" with my 4 year old son. The film makes great use of filling the entire frame, eg. with a spaceship. However, the spaceship was missing the extreme of its nose on the left of the picture, and its tail on the right. Sure enough, playing the disc via the DVD drive on my computer confirmed the cropping effect, as both nose and tail were entirely visible!

I`ve been advised via this Forum and elsewhere (see my earlier thread "Question for Bear or anyone else with a Sony TV") that most TV`s crop the image, but that this can be tinkered with via entering the hidden Service Menu and its adjusting the settings.

My understanding is that you do have to inform your DVD player as to what type of TV you are viewing. My Sony DVD735 asks if its widescreen, 4:3 pan and scan, or 4:3 letterbox. Anomporphic discs should automatically fill the entire screen to the required ratio when you tell the DVD you are viewing on a widescreen TV.

RE: Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

Its a Sony KV-28DS20. Rich informs me my remote needs a "teletext off" button to enable the correct combination (see seperate thread "Message for Bear or anyone else with a Sony TV). Unfortunately, the one supplied with it (RM 888) doesn`t have one!

Service Menu for Sony DVD735 (...and KV28DS20!)

Leading on from my earlier thread ("Question for Bear or anyone else that has a Sony TV), does the Sony DVD735 have a hidden service menu, and if so, how do I access it?

Oh, and if anyone can tell me how to access the servive menu on a Sony KV28DS20 I`d be gratefull!

Cheers,

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Groan! I`ve spent over an hour searching for this info on the internet with no result!! I`m relying on you guys for help - PLEASE!!!!

While we are at it, is there a service menu I can access on the Sony DVD735?

Cheers,

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

I`ll check out the remote for my Sony DVD735 tonight. If not? Blast! I`ll have to call out an engineer afterall!

Thanks for all your advice Rich, I`m away this weekend, but I will let you know how I get on.

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Thanks Rich. I tried the trick with the front hatch but it didn`t work. I`m at work, but I don`t think my remote has a teletext off button - it just cycles through options as you say. As for dimpled buttons on top of the case? I can`t see them on the TV, but the P+ and P- buttons on my remote have dimples, as does the 5 button. However, pressing any combination of these whilst the TV is in standby simply brings it to life!

I`ll keep persevering, thanks for your help.

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Rich, sorry to be dim, but what "dimpled" buttons on the top of the case? I can`t see any (need new glasses!). Can`t access service menu no matter how hard I try...sob! Can you help more??

Gratefully,

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Ah ha! I`ve discovered from these sites that the technical term for the cropping problem I`ve described is `overscan` and it should be possible to sort it from within the hidden Service Menu. I`m feeling braver about having a go! Incidently, my Sony is a KV28DS20. Does anyone know of a site that deals with that model?

Thanks for your help Rich.

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Ooh-err, I`ve looked at these sites and seen I`m not the only Sony TV owner who has problems with cropping, ghosting and poor screen geometry. VERY tempted to play with service menu myself but will almost certainly wimp out and ask Mastercare to send out an engineer to do the job properly!

Very useful info though, I`ll certainly be revisiting these sites.

Cheers,

Nick

RE: Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Cheers for the info Rich. I`ll wander off now and have a peek at the sites you mention. I also heed your words of warning!

Question for Bear or anyone else who has a Sony TV

Hi Bear (and anyone else for that matter!),

I have a problem with cropping on my Sony 28" widescreen TV (see earlier thread) - the image geometry at the edges is also not what it should be. It has been suggested that the problem may be rectified through accessing the service menu, and that other people who have Sony TV`s may be able to advise me how to get to this.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Nick

RE: Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

OK will do so, thanks for the advice.

Rich, do you know how to access the service menu?

Nick

RE: Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

Cheers mate - I`m new to the Forum - how do I get in touch with Bear?

RE: Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

Hi Rich,

Cropping is not excessive but annoying. How do I enter the service menu on my TV?

Image cropping on widescreen TV - help!

Hi. I have a Sony 28" widescreen TV and Sony DVD735 DVD player. I have noticed, in comparison to playback on my computer, that some left and right cropping of movies reproduced in 2.35:1 aspect ratio is present when viewing through my TV/DVD setup. I contacted the supplier of my DVD player and he assured me this was not a player problem. Instead, he said that many TV`s crop images in this way and that I should contact Sony about the TV. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or can anybody give me some advice before I approach Sony?

Cheers,

Nick

RE: WHY SHOULD I BUY MY DVD PLAYER FROM?

I bought my Sony 735 with full standard multimod from Techtronics. Took four days to deliver, very happy with player. Follow-up service via e-mail re a few queries I had excellent and fast. I recommend them highy.

Ghosting on Sony TV

I have a 28 inch Sony WEGA widescreen TV. Recently, I purchased a Sony 735 DVD player from Techtronics. Great picture! Unfortunately, whilst watching DVD`s, I began to notice a slight, but annoying, ghosting effect, where the outline of images are reproduced and shifted slightly to the right. The effect is especially noticable when dark objects are viewed against light backgrounds. Having noticed it first on DVD playback, I then became aware the problem was also there on satellite and analogue TV, and VCR pics. Everything is connected to the TV using scart leads. I also purchased an expensive, high quality scart lead: however, this made absolutely no difference to the picture. I`ve also noticed the black bars at the side of thepic when in 4:3 mode are slightly concave, not straight.

Anybody got any ideas about what might be causing the problem(s), and what I could do about it.
