RE: Panny E50 4x or 8x blank discs? Also, where to buy genuine branded Taiyo Yudens?

Thank you. I shall have a look at this stuff. I have bought from SVP before and had no problems with them so would be happy to buy their discs. However, their TY blanks have no brand name so it`s a chance. I`ll probably risk it, though as they seem an okay supplier.

Panny E50 4x or 8x blank discs? Also, where to buy genuine branded Taiyo Yudens?

I have the Panny E50 and love it. So far, I`ve been using branded Ritek GO4 4x blank discs with 100% success. However, in many a letter forum I`ve been reading that Ritek has gone off the boil quality-wise, so to speak so I`ve decided to switch to Taiyo Yuden as I`ve yet to read of anyone being disappointed with them. But is it okay to use 8x in my E50? Does it, in fact, make any difference at all? Are the 4x, 8x, 16x etc., just for PC burns - which I don`t do?
Also, can anyone recommend a good place to buy Taiyo Yuden discs? I`ve found some places online but don`t know if the discs are genuine as most discs seem to be white tops for printing and therefore have no brand name printed on them. Of course, every website claims to have the genuine article while warning buyers to beware of fakes. How the heck do you tell if a disc is genuine if there`s no brand name? I especially want to be careful as a spindle costs quite a bit. I don`t need a white top so would prefer to go for the silver top discs but, again, there doesn`t seem to be a brand name.
So, in a nutshell, does the 4x or 8x make any difference to a standalone recorder?
Does it matter if the disc is white top or silver top?
Where can I buy TY blanks and not be ripped off?
Thanks.

RE: Stupid me set my DMR-E50 to "remote control 2"

By the way, further to the last post, I have the E50, too.

RE: Stupid me set my DMR-E50 to "remote control 2"

I did exactly the same with mine and was in a blind sweat for ten minutes while I read through the manual but the cure was in there. Keep looking. There is definitely a section to explain what to do although I remember that I had to look really carefully to find it as it wasn`t obvious but it is definitely there. I also learned never to do that again. Phew.

RE: Panasonic DMR-E50 Multi region remote

I bought a second Panny E50 in a sale after being delighted with my first E50 which I bought already chipped for multi-region. The second one wasn`t so I `hired` a hack remote, fired it at the Panny once, returned the remote and now have a superb multi-regional DVD recorder in the sitting room as well as the lounge. Go for it.

RE: 100Hz TVs - is this normal...?

I just helped my Mam and Dad buy their new telly and steered them away from the 100hz to the 50hz after having been through all that myself a couple of months before. I agree with the poster who described 100hz as like an oil painting although I`d been describing it as like a poor watercolour but we`re obviously griping about the same effect. The 100hzs are horrible to watch - with no detail and blurry pictures, everything looks like an airbrushed cartoon, which, you`ll notice, most stores have playing when you look around. A cartoon would look good on anything and there`s no need to show off the quality of the detail. I took a DVD of Lord of the Rings to test and there was no detail on a 100hz screen but I could see all the weave on Gandalf`s hat on a 50hz. There, that must settle it. As for no-one doing a 50hz 36" - Dad bought a Sony which has a superb picture and he`s delighted with the Sky footie on it. By the way, the shop did have a 50hz and a 100hz side by side and the first thing that the salesman said was that there was no comparison between the quality of the picture as the 50hz knocked spots off the 100hz. Who does like these, I wonder?

RE: X-files DVD boxes question

Yep, you`re right, my boxes do say Collectors Edition and, so far, I have all the extras. I don`t think that I`ll go for the new M-lock issues if they don`t have the extras - I like stuff like the commentaries - they add a new dimension.

However, I`m not sure if there`s a difference between the UK Region 2 boxes and the US Region 1 boxes. The bargain Collectors Edition I`ve spotted is probably the UK box and I`m so tempted but I don`t want to miss out on those intriguing extras if they are not on the UK edition. I`ll try to investigate further but I was hoping that some of you guys out there would know if there was a difference between the two versions. The shop where I`ve seen them won`t do returns so I need to be sure. Failing that, it`ll be back to eBay and searching the US site.

RE: X-files DVD boxes question

This is just what I`m needing to know. What`s the difference between the UK and the US releases of the X Files? I`ve been buying the US releases through eBay as and when I can afford them but I`ve spotted some X Files boxes in town that look identical, at the bargain price of £19.99. (These aren`t the new issues in the thinner boxes but the older ones with the fold-out disc store.) I`m a little sad and want all the extras but I`m worried about missing out if I buy the wrong set. I`ve read that the Asian issue (and the Australian ones) aren`t of such good quality and have stuff missing. Can anyone confirm or deny these rumours? Also, is there a difference between the boxed sets that say Collectors` Edition` and those that don`t? Thanks.

RE: panasonic dmre55 region hack?

Hi there, Shifty,
Like you, I need a hack for panasonic dmr e50 and am thinking about going the way of a chipped remote. Do you know if the hack is permanent? What happens if there`s a power cut or if you unplug the set for a while? Any ideas? It`s no bargain if it only lasts as long as the set is connected to the mains. If it is permanent then I`ll send for one. What do you think? Regards, Tops
