100Hz TVs - is this normal...?

Hulk Smash! (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 19th February 2005, 14:56

Hi - I`ve just bought a 36" 100Hz Panasonic TV (TX36PL32). This is the first 100Hz TV I`ve had (I was told they are better than 50Hz - and I couldn`t find any 50Hz 36" TVs!). The picture (on Sky through RGB scart) seems quite different (from my 50Hz Philips) - not in a bad way, but not in a good way - just different!? It is more blurred very close to, and there seems to be very (VERY) faint horizontal lines during white/light scenes (like on very high quality video picture). But in other areas (very fast/flashing) it seems to be better. Is all this normal for a 100Hz TV (and just more noticeable because of the increased size)? Am I just being too fussy and it`s just a case of getting used to 100Hz?

Cheers! :D

It depends how good the processing is on the set. My Tosh is pretty good really, as it has a number of modes that are suited to different situations. The vanilla 100Hz mode isn`t that great, but its natural and active scan modes are very useful. I leave it in natural most of the time, but active is supposed to be better for fast-moving sports (less blurring). It also has a 50Hz prog scan mode if I realy want to use it. Does the Panny have anything similar?

If you never noticed any flicker on your 50Hz set, then buying 100Hz was pointless. As you can see it brings with it more problems than it sorts out.Unfortunately you have fallen for the sales spiel.
100Hz is NOT better, and with low quality sources like some of Sky Digital its a damn sight worse.
Take it back if you can and get a 50Hz set

I have to disagree. I have always had 50hz sets so of course never noticed the difference untill I bought a 100hz set, now everytime i see m 50hz set it looks far less `steady` and indeed does flicker.

I think that (particularly with a 36inch you mention you have) 100hz is a must. Indeed, do they even make a 36inc in 50hz?? (not sure).

I know from extensive research (im buying at the moment myself) that many good CRT`s have lots of `digital enhancment` features on top of 100hz and when many of these are switched on they can cause some problems, but I cant see it simloy being the 100hz processing.

I must certainly say that in my humble opinion 100hz is no sales speil and is indeed a must for a 36inc CRT. But of course, others may disagree?

I must say that I was unimpressed with the Panasonic TVs I saw when looking for my new set. The only ones I liked the look of were Toshiba models (which I ended up with).

Thanks for the replies! I don`t think it`s anything to worry about - I just wanted to check that this sort of thing was normal for 100Hz sets!?

The picture is still very good - and looking around at other 100Hz models in the shop, they seem the same (and the picture is much better than any Plasma screens I have seen). The model I have had excellent reviews (including "Best Buy" etc.) in various magazines, so I guess it`s just a case of getting used to 100Hz after having 50Hz for so long!

Also (as pointed out) I don`t think anyone makes 50Hz 36" TVs so that`s not an option! I`m going to check and see if I can alter the processing, but if not, I`ll just have to get used to it. :B

HULK

Remember though if you are unsure or not happy, get the supplier to send an engineer round to make sure, no point in getting used to it if it is faulty in some way, but im sure you wouldnt anyway.

That`s a good point zelda - I might get an engineer to check it out. Nothing to lose while it`s still under guarantee! :D

100Hz v 50Hz is very subjective as we see. However,if you go into a shop that is brave(or stupid) enough to put sets of identical make side by side, one of each type ,both playing dvd,its hard to see what possible attraction 100Hz has.Admittedly on animation it can give an almost 3D type picture, but on normal tv viewing take a look at newsreaders and close ups. There is no detail, and football matches have the appearance of men running across a green splotch rather than a pitch.
All the picture processing tricks come with 100Hz because it needs it.50Hz doesn`t.Even the home cinema mags mention the blurry movement and lack of detail on even the best 100Hz sets.
Frankly,if you can put up with those plastic pictures you ought to go for plasma or LCD and at least get a small cabinet out of it

I`ll see what the engineer says. Just out of interest, does anyone know if you can make 100Hz TVs into 50Hz ones? Could an engineer do it (or would it cost extra?). Or is it a much more complicated process...

mmm - I might start a new thread asking about this...!
