I tried the hack this evening and it works for me. The left, left left, right bit is indeed the direction arrows. The only thing was that 9 doesn`t make it multi-region on my player, but I can live with this. I tried it on a region 1 dvd of `Vanilla Sky` and then had to do the hack again to get back to region 2 discs.

Haven`t watched The Beach but my picture quality looks ok - the firmware upgrade will allow you to get around Macrovision
