DVR Decisions

Hello everyone. I`ve been lurking around these forums for quite some time now. Most informative.

I`m in the process of banging my head against the wall trying to decide which DVD recorder/HDD to purchase. With a budget of no more than £400 I`ve discounted the Liteon 5045 (too buggy) and the Panasonic E85 (would like the RW feature to transfer stuff to my PC). So, in no order are my final 3:

Pioneer DVR 520
Toshiba XS32
JVC Drm 20/30

I will be connecting up the RF tuner and Ntl. Although I`ve downloaded the manuals there are a few things I`m not sure about. I`m sure you`ve all been asked these questions a thousand times but here goes anyway.

1 - Do all 3 have a scart pass through when the machine is off or do you have to have it switched on all the time?

2 - Are you able to store mp3s on the hard disc so the machine can be used as a jukebox?

3 - I know the Tosh has an IR blaster, but is there any other way of controlling channel switching of the Ntl box through any of these machines?

4 - Are all recorded discs (with the exception of DVD RAM) compatible with all PCs?

5 - What are the relative qualities of the RF tuners?

6 - Are you able to record 2 channels at the same time, or watch one recorded program whilst recording another?

Sorry if the questions are dumb but just need to know the little things before my brain melts.

Thanks in advance.

Tat. :)

RE: Has anyone bough CTHD from http://www.dvdasian.com ???

Same as above for me matey. Excellent service, even though I was a little cautious about them. It took about a week to arrive after actually placing the order. Great disc too. No problems with customs either.
Go for it!!

RE: Region 3 DVDs

I also recieved my copy from dvdasian.com in less than a week. Great service.

The picture and sound quality are both excellent, The disc is worthy of a R1 or R2 release. It has to be one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. The extras/menus are all in english and you have the choice of English subtitles or English dubbing. Be quick though, the next batch of these discs will not have the English options as the studio are trying to prevent people like us from purchasing the R3 version.

RE: DVD`s - Dual Screen Versions

You could always zoom into the picture. You may lose some picture quality but you should also get rid of the black bars if they annoy you that much.
I have to say, I won`t buy anything now unless it is in widescreen as you can miss out on nearly 50% of the picture. Widescreen all the way baby.

RE: Beastie Boys Anthology on Wharfie 750s

I`ve got exactly the same problem with my Lecson DVD 900. The videos play perfectly well with commentaries but I can`t get the extras to work at all. It works fine on my PC.
Sorry that this is of absolutely no help whatsoever, I just thought I`d let you know that you are not alone.

RE: Essential DVDs in a collection

Fight Club is a definite. It is the best DVD I have ever seen. Also, in no particular order:
The Thing
Seven -2 Disc
Jaws
Natural Born Killers
Toy Story Box Set
Gladiator
Magnolia -2 Disc

RE: Please read - Regarding

Just ordered the disc from the site. Hope the film is as good as everyone says.
How long did the disc take to arrive after placing your order?

RE: THE HORROR OF CENSORSHIP LAWS IN THE UK

It`s not just the politicians that push the censorship debate, the media (read tabloid press) are always the first to point their fingers at the nearest whiff of controversy. Their need to sell papers and the general lack of any intelligent insight, lead them to pick on films or music, or any other form of art that they don`t understand. Just look at Crash (oh please) and Eminem ( an angry kid with a voice). They can`t seriously believe that society was all rosy before cinema and pop music arrived.
These papers like to believe that they are the voice of the `people`, yet I believe that most people do not like to be told what they can and can`t watch. They just want the choice for themselves.

RE: THE HORROR OF CENSORSHIP LAWS IN THE UK

I managed to see quite a few "Video Nasties" when I was a kid (about 12-14 years old). A bloke used to come round in a van packed to the brim with dodgy videos. Those were the days.
You are absolutely right about the BBFC. We are supposed to live in a free and democratic society where we have the right to choose what can do as long as it dosen`t cause harm to others. Who are these morally perfect babysitters? I certainly didn`t vote to have these minders wagging their fingers at me in disgust, telling me that I can`t see this or that because they find it offensive. It is ridiculous.
If you can peel yourself away from those disgusting films (and the rotting corpse in the corner of your room) you should read See No Evil: Banned Films and Video Controversy. It is an excellent book that takes an indepth look at the original Video Nasties and the impact these films and censorship have on society.

RE: My new Lecson DVD900

I`ve had my Lecson since December and have had only one problem with it. It works fine on the so called problem discs like The Matrix and Gladiator, but I recieved the Beastie Boys Anthology discs for Xmas and the player will not allow me to play about with the supplementary material (multi angle and audio stuff). It works fine on my PC.
Does anyone know of any other problem discs with the Lecson.
I might be new to the whole DVD world, but this player really is excellent and the sound from the 5.1channels is ace.

RE: Problems with Lecson DVD-900 Remote Hack - Please Help!

Good to see you have bought yourself a pretty decent machine. The hack to make it region 1 only is 11111, for region 2 only 1111(make sure the drawer is open when typing these in). To make it a multiregion player, again open the drawer and press A-B, Zoom and then with the cursor keys, Top, Left, Bottom, Right. Bingo, your mate can bring you back DVDs from anywhere in the world.

RE: T2:Ultimate Edition problems

Thanks guys, the press number and then enter worked just fine. Pity that the tacked on ending is such a cop out.

T2:Ultimate Edition problems

Hey guys, I hope one of you can help me with this iccle problemo. It`s driving me a bit nuts.
I recently purchased the R1 version of T2:Ultimate Edition and I am unable to unlock the hidden 3rd version of the film. I`ve tried typing in the Judgement date, 82997, but sod all happens. I own the Lecson (excellent player, apart from this obviously) and was wondering if it was a problem with the player or the code.
Cheers, Tat.
