RE: Xbox 360 Now available at Play - £279
Blu-Ray players (like early dvd players and dvd recorders) will be very expensive at launch - at least £500. So if PS3 go for a Spring `06 launch then they will take a massive loss to sell the PS3 at 360 price levels.
If they defer to late `06 or even `07 as per recent speculation then Blu-Ray production may have ramped up enough to allow a cheaper price. However, this delay could cost then dear in the race for the HiDef dvd standard, and allow Toshiba to win the battle with HD-DVD.
I think Sony are in a very dangerous position.
I will definitely get a 360 but if PS3 is expensive and sports a failing Hi Def standard then I would not bother. I doubt that there will be no noticable graphics or performance differences between the two consoles anyway.
RE: Xbox 360 Now available at Play - £279
I disagree with the comments made about the dual price point.
Firstly, Microsoft have already made some minimum requirements for the games developers such as 5.1 sounds and 720P resolution. They also stated that games should not rely on a HD.
The lack of a HD should not make the games any less the killer app - the most likely difference would be longer load times for the basic version.
Secondly, it makes sense from a business point of view. Some customers would prefer to payout less initially and upgrade later.
I would also add that these prices are already aggressive and I doubt that they will need to drop much if at all when the PS3 is release. The PS3 is going to cost much more than the Xbox due to the Blu-Ray discs. Sony CEO has already stated it will be expensive and is not going to be a games console for the kids room.
