About this user: I interested in home cinema & DVD obvioulsy. I bought a Wharfdale 750 nearly 2 years ago and am very satisfied. I have a small but growing DVD collection. I like SF & Fantasy & classic films stuff + Dinsney for my daughter. I have a Bush widscreen TV RF 6682 VPL - which I bought about 4 months ago. It has a very good picture (better than the Panasonic Quintrix I was renting - at least with my Tarzan DVD) but the sound is crap. I need a good sourround sound system. I also have a PS2 but not for watching DVDs.

RE: TECHNOSONIC DVD 207P - Hack Wanted Please

Hi, I don`t know if you still need this but here is the hack for Technosonic DVD 207P. I found it at www.dvdhacks.co.uk

1) Open DVD laoder tray.
2) Input 9735
3) Select region from set up menu.

I`ve selected region 0 and it seems to play all the region 1 disks I have tried & the region 2 ones.

Good luck

Dominic

RE: Pioneer DV-360s vs Tosh SD-330E Help!!!!

Hi Rainbow6,

You`ve hit the nail on the head with re the wavy line -Quote:
or that the picture at the top of the screen is distorted and appears slightly wavy, when say in the frame comes a straight up and down column or something?

Re my Bush TV it is the RF668VPL and all it says in the manual is Quote:
TV Broadcasting ... PAL BG/PAL.
This leads me to think that it doesn`t do any type of Pal to Ntsc conversion. I will try to contact BUSH direct but I think I have been down that road before - when I first noticed the wavy line - to no avail.

Re my NAD T550 player as I said before the maual says it is Quote:
Signal system - NTSC (US/Canada) / PAL (Eur).
Nothing about conversion.

So still not sure which way to go. NTSC considerstions aside - which is the better player the Pioneer or the Tosh?

One more question does either of them remember where you are on a DVD when you stop and them resume from where you left off. My father inlaws Sony can do this for up to 6 disks - I think it is very useful especially with kids who are always stopping and starting.

Thanks

Dominic

Pioneer DV-360s vs Tosh SD-330E Help!!!!

Help I am torn between the Pioneer DV-360s and the Tosh SD-330E. My current DVD player a NAD T-550 is skipping on alot of rented DVDs - most of which play ok on my PS2. I am worried that it is on the way out and I am looking for a replacement. I have tried using a cleaning disk but this has not helped.

I was all set to get the multiregion tosh from Amazon - especially after the great reviews. However the site says you need a NTSC compatible TV to play region 1 DVDs. My NAD is multi region and as far as I can ascertain is Pal/NTSC switchable (at least according to the manual) but this seems to be automatic as there is no option to do this in the menus. It plays my only region 1 DVD Toy Story ok - there is a little wavy line along the top edge of the picture - barely noticeable unless like me you are constantly looking at it. My TV is a Bush 28" widescreen and I can`t find out if it can convert NTSC or not but the NAD works with it ok - except for this wavy line.

I am now worried that the Tosh may not work with my TV. I from what I have read on this site it seems that the Tosh can be set to PAL, NTSC or Auto. But it does not do an conversion.

Amazon states that the Pioneer DV-360s is Quote:
Dual System (PAL/NTSC) (Video output)
. I assume this means it can play both on any telly. I can`t find any reviews on this player except on the Amazon site. I know the 350 was a What Hi- fi 5 star player.

So I am asking which one to go for or should I get my NAD fixed? :/

Any thoughts gratefully received - my wife is fed up of discussing it.

Thanks

Dominic

RE: Cyberhome 528 and Packard bell 5.1 system???

I agree! I have this system set up with my DVD player as a stop gap unitl I can afford and amp & surround speaker separates. It is very annoying having no remote. It sometimes puts me off watching because not only do I have no remote, I have to turn off the tv`s internal speakers maually (theres a switch on the back) & I have to set the DVD player from two channel to 5.1 (at least this can be done via remote) then fire up the packard bell before I can settle down to a good movie.

Oh for the day when I can send DVD, TV, VCR & cable though an amp!

Or am I just lazy?

RE: DD & DTS at Lidl £129.99

thanks PJ & Steve,

I`ve actually got the Packard Bell from PC world - which as you say is great. Frustrating that it only works for the DVD player and that I have go through the rigmarol of switching off my TV`s internal speakers and switching on the sub + plus no remote to adjust volume from comfort of sofa! I thought mabye with the typhoon set up I could run TV,VCR etc through it but having looked at the web site it seems not!

I`ll just have to kep saving for my Marantz 5200 and Diamond speakers!

Thanks for all the advice.

Dominic

RE: DD & DTS at Lidl £129.99

Steve,

I`d be very interested to have a look at the web page you mention and see what they say. Can you post a link here? Or send to me direct at rwhd[at].moc.liamtoh

Cheers

Dominic

DD & DTS at Lidl £129.99

As of Thursday 7th March Lidl are selling a complete surround sound system for £120. Or at least acccording to the flyer my spouse (who pointed this out to me) recieved today they are.

It is a Typhoon (whoever they may be) Soundmax 5.1 Digital Audio System complete with centre speaker (with amp), sub, 2 front & 2 rear satellite system + remote. Apparently it decodes DD & DTS, has 2500 watts PMPO(?) total system power and total power (RMS) 45W (don`t understand the difference).

Any one know anything about Typhoon - looks like a bargain. Could be good - could be crap!

RE: THX

Check out Essential Home Cinema magazine Issue Ten for the full sp on THX.

RE: Toy Story R1 - NAD T550 & NTSC - Heeelp!!!

Thanks Steve-0 but there doesn`t seem to be any way of manually changing from PAL to NTSC on the menu that I have found. Unless there are hidden menues that you can only access via a code or something.

As I said before it seems to be playing fine - apart form this little bit at the top. The picture was so good I dIdn`t notice it straight way. But now I have seen it, it is driving me mad. My wife says it doesn`t bother her as it is only a small part of the picture. But that is not the point - DVD is supposed to be perfect - isn`t it?

Could the player be at fault?

Toy Story R1 - NAD T550 & NTSC - Heeelp!!!

I have a NAD T550 multiregion that I bought from Richer Sounds. I think it must have been chipped by RS as the NAD website states that it is illegal to sell multiregion players.

I have just bought Toy Story & TS2 region one from Play - v good. Anyway they play very well on the NAD. The picture is perfect - almost.

On closer inspection I notice that at the very top of the screen ( 1 or 2 cms) all the veritcal lines (door frames, etc) have a kink in them. This only happens with these two discs not any of my PAL R2 ones. Is this something to do with the NTSC to PAL conversion that I have read so much about in this forum?

The NAD manual states that it is PAL/NTSC switchable - but I don`t know if this means it converts PAL to NTSC or just plays both types of disc? I contacted NAD and all they could come up with was "As far as I know, the switch is automatic when the T550 is plugged into different voltage."??? Well that can`t be the case as I`m not changing the voltage.

I have a BUSH RF6682 VPL w/s tv which according to the manual & the help line only plays PAL BG/PAL?

Has anyone got any ideas? Should I take my player back, are the dics faulty (unlikely I know) or is it a conversion problem?

Long winded I know but help would be appreciated.

I should add that I am using a scart lead for connection.

RE: Packard Bell 5.1 + Wharfdale750 - Decoder needed? Tech Help!!!

Thanks for the advice Dave & Westy. I`ve read your review of the Kenwood and take what you`ve said on board.

My problem is that I see myself trying to make the next step up in Home Cinema - all be it on a small budget! I`ve had the 750 for 18months and now would like to upgrade to surround sound. I don`t have a huge space both in my room and in the TV cabinet. I was looking at the Sony HTK215 but then saw I could get a separates system for about the same price £300 and thought this would be better. I was looking at the Kenwood as metioned or the Sherwood RDV6095RDS and something like the Eltax Hollywood (perhaps too big for my space) or Limit HT5.1.

I like your suggestion of the Cyberhome ald528 (save space) & twinning it with the Packard Bell would save money. It would cost me less than I paid for my 750.

But is it a step up or sideways?

Comments appreciated.

Dom

Packard Bell 5.1 + Wharfdale750 - Decoder needed? Tech Help!!!

I am tempted to buy the Packard Bell 5.1 Home Theatre system as discussed in the Bargain Bucket forum.

I know that I need a decoder (which the Wharfdake 750 doesn`t have) I am planning to buy a separate amp Kenwood KRFV5050 or similar.

The Packard Bell has amplification in the sub - therefore my question is - if I connect the dvd to the packarb bell via another amp ( to do the decoding) will I have problems, as I will have two amps connected to each other. Does that make sense?

Please help as the packard bell seems like a good deal at £60 - but if it doesn`t work it would be a waste.

Thanks
Dominic

Has any one tried the Vivanco 8 remote?

I am interested in a universal remote but have read alot of posts on here re OneForALL not working with Wharfdale 750 & other DVDs.

There is a short review of the Vivanco Control 8 in Essential Home Cinema issue ten - but no not much info.

Has anyone tried it or any other Vivanco remotes?

Problem free Wharfdale750 hack.

Forgive me if you have all been here before - but has any one hacked their Wharfdale 750 and had no problems? I`ve scan through most of the threads on this subject but have seen mostly bad news - this mabye simply that people only post when they have problems.

I am keen to hack my DVD - as currently tempted by the Shrek 2 Disc set R1 and obvioulsy by the huge price diffarence.

Please let me know.

Dominic

RE: Surround Sound Newbie needs Help!

Thanks for the info about the Bush surround sound system - but I`m sure that the Warfdale 750 doesn`t have a built in decoder - any one please correct me if I am wrong.

I have checked out the reviews for the HTK215 - it looks very interesting.

Thanks

Surround Sound Newbie needs Help!

I am in the market for a cheap surround sound system package - ie decoder & speakers. I understand they may not be as good as a separates system but I don`t have a lot of cash to splash - £300 ish.

I was thinking of something like the Sony HTK 475 or 215 (although this doesn`t suppot DTS I think). I haven`t managed to find out much about it review wise and the is nothing in the back of What Hi-Fi about this type of system - they only mention the ones that come with a DVD player.

I have a Wharfdale 750 and a Bush widescreen TV RF 6682 VPL.

I am keen to get something with small speakers as I have a small livingroom - also I don`t have alot of space in my cabinet for the centre speakers etc.

You have probably been over this ground before but if anyone has any one got any suggestions, I would like to read them.
