Review of For The Love Of Ada

2 / 10

Introduction

The story of Ada and Walter began as a sitcom in 1970 on Thames Television and had a rapid demise although it managed to spawn this film.

Ada meets Walter at the grave of her husband Walter was the gravedigger who buried him. Despite obstacles including Ada`s daughter and son-in law they get married and the film opens on the morning of their first wedding anniversary. As series of misunderstandings ensue as Ada and Walter try to celebrate the day whist wondering if it has all been a mistake. Unknown to them, Ada`s daughter (Barbara Mitchell) and her husband Leslie (Jack Smethurst) have organised a surprise celebration party for them that evening.

Video

This is a an average transfer of an undistinguished film.

Audio

Unfortunately this disc has sound but as the script appeared to have been dropped on the floor in several sheets and reassembled with no thought or logic it is probably best ignored.

Features

A trailer-enjoy.

Conclusion

When the highlight of a film is the opening credits because of a rather sweet Gilbert O` Sullivan song then there is little more to add. This is another example of getting too much of `a good thing`. The meandering plot and unfunny comedy has been used to death in Last of the Summer Wine and this is even worse than that. There are clichéd dumb blondes, adulterous fumblings and endless misunderstandings of the blood pressure inducing variety. At least Irene Handl manages a modicum of dignity but paying her a decent pension would have been kinder than this.
