Review of Spaced

9 / 10

Introduction

I saw this the first time around, thoroughly enjoyed t and then promptly forgot where my teapot was. When the second series arrived, I relocated my teapot, rediscovered this excellent series and bored my friends silly until they watched it!

Spaced is very nearly the reality we all have, either in our heads or just down the road a little. It`s surreal.

Tim and Daisy are both single and both need a place to rent - so naturally they pretend to be a professional couple in order to get somewhere, despite knowing each other only a couple of weeks. The landlady is odd. The other tennant is very odd. Their friends are, you guessed it, odd.

Tim`s boss is called Bilbo and sells comics. Well, owns a comic shop anyway.

Video

Nice to see Channel 4 showcasing decent dvds....

We get an excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer and a nicely thoughout, cartoon-esque dvd menu. Video quality is superb for a sitcom and right up there with decent Hollywood blockbusters. No grain, maybe a little muddy in places but that`s about it.

Audio

The audio track is only stereo but works very well. Dialogue comes across crisply and the incidental music is excellent.

Features

Again, this is a dvd to be proud of.....

The commentary is very good, explaining where all the little in-jokes are (there are more than you think). The trailers are hilarious, taking off big blockbuster movies from the same year (The Matrix, The Blair Witch etc) and some of the deleted scenes should really have remained in the show...

The BBC should take note.

Conclusion

Spaced is an acquired taste, you`ll either love it or hate it really but it`s definately worth a try ;)

The dvd is a showcase of what a recent TV sit-com can look like and indeed, should look like.

My work here is done.
