RE: [VIDEO] BBC is making a Victorian-era War of the Worlds TV series

Managed to drag myself through the last episode and have to say I found the whole thing crushingly disappointing. After the excellent first episode, the second & third just seemed to go nowhere, with the last episode just seeming to be nothing but filler until the final credits.

Mind you, if you think about the source material, there's not really that much of a watchable story as is. Jeff Wayne's musical version & the Tom Cruise movie fleshed out the original narrative, but the original premise, (Victorians deal with alien invasion, get slaughtered, then the invaders die with little to no intervention from the protagonists) doesn't, with hindsight, make for a thrilling tale on its own merits.

Maybe the problem is we all know how it ends. The original book, and the film does this well, really sells the defeat of mankind by the martians, we're done, we're a gonner, we can't win, we're about to give up and then... atischoo!

It was just poor and disappointing. The 'anti-empire' hubris was heavy handed. The feeling of threat was non existent, the shoe-horned-in science guy character (who the female lead implausibly met up with again in apocalypse London) was unnecessary. I mean, I didn't really think much of any of it - I didn't even like the first episode because it had none of the anticipation of the book (not much of it really followed the book at all from my distant memory of it).

Jeff Wayne's musical version has more drama and terror in it without any images. I way preferred Spielberg's movie too.

After giving up with Dracula, I started this tonight, and it's poor. The deviations from the book make it worse, giving up after the first episode.

Never a truer word spoken in jest.

I watched this on the BBC I player, and it was drastic, really bad, and I was so looking forward to it. Pity.

I think it is now time for to finish the BBC licence and let them earn money via commercial adverts and/or payable packages or channels.

Making the over 75's pay for a licence is now (means tested) is the beginning of the end for them with regard tax payers having to splash out. This tax for having a TV must be stopped, just like we did in Australia many years ago.
