I am not young enough to know everything.
Having just watched both of those videos I'm at a loss to understand how it generates enough money to pay for itself.
The thousands of people required & everybody's being paid & the extraordinary amount of money spent.
Even the most mundane of items all of which are required every race, how the hell are they paying for it?
Teams don't race to make money, but it's good for brand - Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, Renault, Red Bull - serious brownie points for flogging cars and sugar water, which have probably billions at their disposal and good for automotive r&d too. It's known that they have to spend a fortune to race. Look at the money Red Bull have - a football team, two F1 teams, and they sponsor loads of other sports/events.
But they do also generate massive sponsorship (high cudos 'product'), worldwide tv rights, expensive entry for race day.
