PlayUSA RIP?

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 13th February 2011, 12:03

Tried navigating to PlayUSA this morning and got a page not found error.

Also, the International Link from Play.com isn`t there anymore. Looks like it just slipped away into the night when no one was looking.

It`s been winding down for months.

Aye think I asked a fair while ago now about where people got their R1s from as PlayUSA seemed to be winding down. :/

Tho these days the desire for R1 has all but gone.

I ordered Simpsons Season 20 on DVD from them about a year ago as that was a Region 1 only release. I guess with supermarkets having AAA titles for £5 a few months after UK release, and UK release often not being  6 months - 1 year behind US like it used to be, there`s not so much interest in US DVDs. I still sometimes look at http://www.dvdcompare.net/ to see how different regions` releases vary, but haven`t seen any, where I was willing to pay the extra amoutn of money for a small amoutn of extra content in ages.

Actually a Christmas present I bought for the missus was a US Region 1 DVD which I got from a reseller on Amazon.co.uk. Done that a few times rather than use playusa or a US company.

I don`t think playusa did Blu Ray did they? http://regionfreemovies.com/ is useful for chekcing region of Blu Rays.

I remember PlayUSA used to do CDs as well, and I bought some CDs from them for US CDs with bonus tracks etc.

Before that when they were play247 my first few DVD were from them, first being Criterion Beastie Boys Anthology

Digital downloading will have also assisted with the demise

Illegal downloading maybe... They died because of the reasons stated above. Importing has become largely redundant nowadays due to global release dates. They did sell BD, but they were Canadian discs so a lot of people don`t like them. They weren`t that cheap either. I bought the odd one or two for a tenner (Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn), but on the whole it works out much cheaper to get stuff from the UK or Europe than the US and there were/are better sites for importing than PlayUSA. The current state of the economy couldn`t have helped either.

I think you will find that now that playusa has closed down that all region 1 DVDs can be obtained from Play.com. Play.com is/was a part of Playusa using same account details on both sites.
Since the introduction of Play Trade to which is global it looks like now everything comes under the one site.

PlayUSA spawned from Play.com (formerly Play247). Play Trade is not the same as Play.com, as you`re buying from third parties.
